Transform Your Hustle Into Serenity

March 15, 2016 by Dawn Michelle

I’ve been doing a lot of juggling lately between new projects and commitments, as well as working on my own personal goals and dreams.  Whether you’re an entrepreneur or work for another company, it appears that if you really desire success, you must make many sacrifices to meet your goals.  Compromising your own personal self care and leisure time to meet work needs isn’t the only way to achieve success though.

The days of eating my meals in the car as I drove to multiple part-time jobs along side attending dance auditions and being in rehearsals has shifted greatly.  I obviously needed those part-time jobs for income, and the hustle is truly glorified in our society.  Well I was definitely hustling!  I decided to question how I was spending my time and money, and made a lot of changes to find more balance in my life.  There are so many ways to achieve the same goal.  It’s your decision if you want to arrive completely exhausted, or healthy and composed.

Here are five personal choices that changed my former work hustle into something much more serene by decreasing my spendings and rethinking my methods.

1. Minimal Shopping

I’ve learned to seek out and enjoy quality items that last.  This prevents me from looking for replacements often or buying multiples unnecessarily.  I’ve also decluttered our home which allows me to see what I do have and enjoy it.  Cultivating a capsule wardrobe of quality pieces and having a super simple yet effective beauty regimen helps tremendously too.  That leaves weekly grocery shopping which I try to accomplish in a day, two days if necessary.  The more I stay out of stores, the less opportunity for unplanned additions to sneak into my cart.  Unless you question why you spend money on particular items, you are constantly and easily swayed by marketing and media.

2. Reusable Items

Using reusuable items as simple as fabric napkins, cleaning cloths, a safety razor, etc. lowered my monthly budget.  I’ve noticed that most of the zero waste lifestyle changes I have made has saved me time and money.  Reusing items and finding high quality alternatives to one-time convienence items minimizes your expenses, shortens your shopping trips, and is environmentally friendly.

3. Conscious Leisure Time

We no longer have cable which has created more conscious leisure time and creative energy.  Although we do have Netflix, I’ve been listening to music more, and I am no longer distracted by shows I would not normally watch.  I’ve also become more aware of how much I had given to unconscious leisure time compared to when I now set time aside to watch a good movie or documentary.

It is so important to take time to enjoy life and relax.  Time with friends, taking a nap or a bath, being in nature, going to the museum, dancing or doing yoga, or just observing others while sipping tea at a cafe helps to recharge you.  All work and no play is unhealthy.  Setting time aside for personal time refills the emotional bank to endure work, family, and the ups and downs of life.  Conscious leisure time is a necessity not a luxury!

4. Work Smart Not Hard

No matter what I’m working on, I’ve learned to listen to my intuition more.  When I follow my intuition I get things done much more effectively and with a positive flow.  I’ve wasted a lot of time worrying, then slaving to get something done way too much in the past.  Neither is necessary.

Working hard and not smart is like spending every moment in crisis mode.  Everyone knows that in a crisis things are often resolved much more smoothly if you stay calm, and make a wise decision for everyone involved.  This is something I’ve had to learn the hard way after experiencing adrenal fatigue.  Time is money to some degree, yet your health is actually much more valuable.

5. Question Everything

So often our conditioning is not our own, but from society, our parents, teachers, our peers, and media.  Do you really believe that you will attract the perfect partner and experience immense love by wearing a certain perfume?  Most likely not, yet either you purchased it and are truly enjoying it, or it is sitting on your vanity along side numerous others to fill an unconscious void.

When we look outside ourselves for answers, we easily assimilate into the rat race of work, shop, work, shop, work, shop, and dissatisfaction.  When you begin questioning everything, you start to redefine your life to fit the world in your heart, and not the world we see around us.  Questioning everything helps you to find your truth and what will spark bliss in your life.

Creativity in Context

Whether I’m working on a dance job or creating content for Minimalist Beauty with writing and photography, artistry in general needs playtime, rest, and nutritious meals for fuel and inspiration.  Time is more valuable to me than money, so I’ve reduced my expenses, changed my perspective with simple living, and found ways to have what I desire in a different context that gives me joy.  In the future I’d like to say that my serene work blossomed into beautiful experiences, and most importantly helped others and the planet.  Work that you love so much that it really is play is true prosperity.  And it doesn’t have to be an insane hustle!

What are your thoughts on this?  How do you find that balance between work and play?

Such good reminders! I love your outlook on life and how simple changes can make us more effective at work. Last night I was reflecting on my own job and how much I believe in it. It was actually so helpful to spend a little time meditating on my professional career and the impact I have on others (I work in higher ed). I know many of my coworkers are focused on the “hustle” but I want to have a serene presence at work so I can help students even more.

I love this post. Great reminders.
Ditching disposable and buying high quality saves so much time and money (and the environment), it should be written in every schoolbooks, starting from First grade!

      Hi Chiara,
Thank you! Environmentalism should definitely be taught in grade school! I am sure there are some teachers that do.

Hello Dawn. First of all, I wanted to thank you for your blog. I am not sure you realize how much it helps people and me in particular.
As for this post, it is exactly what I needed to read 🙂 and a clear representation of what I am striving for. You see, I am in the middle of the whole changing my life to a more conscious me. And it can be difficult to let go of disposables as well as emotional luggage without falling in the ‘hustling’ or giving up or watering down our goals. But I am hanging on :).

      Hi Gaëlle,
Thank you so much for your comment. I honestly don’t know how much of an impact my blog really makes, but I do LOVE sharing and writing as well as hearing from my readers. I am so glad that this article was helpful to you. When I was seriously hustling, I had no idea what another way could look like and I could still be doing what I love every day. There are so many ways to achieve the same thing, it’s all about creating how you desire for it to look in your own life. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. Don’t give up on your dreams or living with clear intention!

I like this alot, I think this should be emphasized more as law instead of suggestions. I quit the monopoly game when I was 37. I had always worked and told it was what everyone did and I wondered who made up that rule? I realized it is a totally patriarchal mentality which has infected the masses, and I wanted to be free to be me to see what in actually what GOD had intended. I did find out and it has nothing to do with what men have forced upon this planet. I will never go back. I have the time I want for myself, and I live as a free spirit, close to all of Nature/Godly things and being healthy, happy and beautiful both for myself and the world who comes in contact with me. I gardening is how I pray, is my devotional and the soils, grass, trees, skies, waters etc……Nature…… is my temple.

      Hi Anonymous,
Thank you so much for your comment! I never liked playing Monopoly! It’s kind of crazy that we sometimes unconsciously choose to play it in real life though. I love how you describe your new lifestyle. I am also so happy to hear that you took your life back and found peace. Living close to nature sounds so divine. Best wishes!

I met a woman the other day who openly shared some I met a woman the other day who openly shared some of her challenges with motherhood. Motherhood is intensely challenging, beyond humbling, and at times you just want the day to be over then realizing that you’ll be back at it the next day. It never ends and there isn’t much reprive. It’s been on my heart to share some encouragement to any mother who will read this. I pray this will bless you in some way. The link is in my profile!

Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a m Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a multitude of medicinal properties along with being a prominent spice in many cultural dishes. For starters, fenugreek seeds are packed with protein for strengthening strands, mucilage for moisturizing and soothing the scalp while detangling the hair, and most importantly nicotinic acid which may minimize hair shedding while soothing scalp issues. Fenugreek seeds are also anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal which is beneficial for soothing a dry irritated scalp as well as high in iron. 🍂

These little seeds are a win win for natural hair care and can be used in various ways. I’ve used fenugreek seeds in my beauty regimen on and off for years. Today I wanted to share four easy ways you can incorporate fenugreek in your hair regimen to promote healthy hair growth. The link is in the profile. 🍂

God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture was taken before they removed the bricking which was VERY NOISY to say the least. We haven’t been completely able to avoid the beginning of the construction process, but I honestly think it’s a good thing. This way we can remain GRATEFUL throughout the entire process. GRATITUDE during LIFE’S IMPERFECTION develops CONTENTMENT. That is one thing I work on daily. If you missed our “We’re Moving Again” testimony it’s on the blog. 🌿🍁🍃

Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the wee Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the week. I make muffins for Saturday’s breakfast (either corn bread, pumpkin, or banana bread muffins) to have with fruit, a big crockpot dinner for the weekend (beans & rice bowls, lentils and sweet potato stews, or a big veggie and red potato stew) to serve with bread, tortillas, grains, and/or salad depending on the dish, and I’m usually putting orders together to go out for @iamazuha today too. All the while I’m also making other food for the day. 🍂🥧🍁

Friday’s are crazy because of the usual responsibilities, but mainly because I really want to relax a bit over the weekend. Over this past year I’ve worked really hard to create systems to make working from home and being a homemaker easier. Homemaking really is like running a small boutique bed and breakfast hotel. It takes planning ahead, having a solid system, financial planning, commitment, and a lot of love. I’ve been learning to really enjoy this process. Just like everybody else I’ve been baking more this year than ever. Very rewarding. 🍂🥧🍁

Wishing all of you a beautiful and blessed weekend!

We’re MOVING again! With everything going on wi We’re MOVING again! With everything going on with the world wide pandemic, I’m seeing the importance of sharing anything good that the Lord is doing in your life with others. We need HOPE. We need to share the JOY of walking with God. The testimonies of glorifying God would just add encouragement that I know I need. I LOVE hearing of God making ways out of no way, giving us more hope and FAITH. 🌿🍂🍃

I was initially praying to God for ways to endure what we were about to go through while somehow someway making it nice for my family during the process. But God was already orchestrating a new way for us to not even have to endure it at all. Read my testimony on Minimalist Beauty... (link in profile) 🌿🍂🍃

If God has done ANYTHING in your life no matter how small PLEASE share it in the comments below. We all need to hear what’s good! The news shares otherwise, but we can create a space here of good testimonies. Please share below and I pray you are having a blessed day. 🌿🍂🍃

We could all use an IMMUNE BOOST right now. Here’s a simple juice recipe that I make for just that. I call it SPICY APPLE JUICE and my three (almost four) year old drinks it up no problem! 🍎

I simply juice 2 WHOLE medium/large APPLES (3 small apples pictured) + 3 CLOVES of GARLIC in a slow masticating juicer for one immune boosting serving. Yes I do include the core as it has many health benefits. 🍎

After having my 1st official winter back on the east coast last year, RAW GARLIC was how I made it through without getting sick at all while caring for sick family members. 🍎

Since then I juice garlic in many of my juice recipes or mince up multiple cloves as dinner toppings for chickpea pasta, beans and rice bowls, and stews. What I LOVE most of all is hearing my son say, “More Juice?” Proud Mama!!!! 🍎

I started wearing linen clothing because it’s ex I started wearing linen clothing because it’s extremely practical. Linen is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics on the market. Linen is also considered the world’s strongest natural fabric. After tiring of purchasing new clothing every season for my heavily worn small capsule wardrobe, it just made sense to look for mid and heavy weight linen garments that could be worn year round and layered that actually lasted.
🍃

Linen clothing can last up to 2-3 decades if properly cared for. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but have finally found a simple method for caring for my linen garments. (Link in profile.)
