I LOVE making my own beauty products. This one is probably one of my easiest recipes. This hair and body butter takes five minutes to make, and has only two main ingredients. The third ingredient is only an optional bonus.
What you will need…
Essential Oil (optional for scent)
I personally don’t like to heat my ingredients if I do not have to. If you have an electric hand mixer there is no need to heat the ingredients. Using heat can remove some of the healing properties from the butter and oils used, so I avoid using heat as much as possible.
To create this hair and butter add two parts of shea butter to one part of coconut oil, and mix until smooth in a mixing bowl with your electric mixer. I used 1 cup of shea butter and 1/2 cup of coconut oil. For a lovely scent add 50 drops of your favorite essential oil. I used lavender essential oil this time, yet pure vanilla absolute is my favorite!
Transfer your hair and body butter into a clean glass jar, and enjoy as often as you like. A little goes a long way with this one, so you will never have to use a lot. Also make as much or as little as you like especially since this recipe is so easy to make. Note the softer and smoother the shea butter is that you use, the easier and faster it will be to whip up this beautiful butter.
If you are interested in a more intricate beauty butter recipe, then you definitely want to check out the DIY Tropical Vanilla Hair & Body Butter. Another option to enhance this recipe is to infuse your oil prior to creating your butter. I love solar infusing oil with vanilla beans. The scent is beyond magical especially if you are a vanilla lover like I am. I’ve also shared other herbal infused oil options if you are interested.
Maybe this Simple 5 Minute Hair & Body Butter Recipe is perfect for lazy days, yet these few ingredients definitely make a luscious butter regardless!
I’d love to know if you try this!

Hi Dawn
I made this previously after reading about it elsewhere, but mine is really hard, whereas yours looks soft and creamy! Perhaps my ratios were out. It’s also winter here now, so the coconut oil has solidified. I’ll give it another go sometime!
Thanks
Anna

Hi Anna,
This ratio makes a very creamy butter. If you try it again let me know how it comes out. Have a beautiful day!

Hello Dawn,
I love your site. I come from Sudan where (until recently, with the skin lightening craze bringing in harmful products), natural skincare was all we used. Some of it is quite complex, like smoke baths, but being in Europe now that’s all but impossible. Since I left home my skin has been problematic to say the least. I do use oils and they keep my skin clear, but I have a problem with sunscreens. They all break me out. That’s where all my issues lie. What sunscreen do you use? I’ve used everything under the sun, from natural to synthetic. And, as that’s the no.1 ‘anti-aging’ product, I am at a loss, because it makes my skin worse. Help!

Hi Selma,
I shared my favorite sunscreens here. I hope you find something that works well for your skin.

I JUST made this! And by the way THANK YOU for your zero waste/natural skin care advice for newborns! My neighbor’s daughters son has very sensitive skin and I am tempted to gift her and her baby with a little bit of this lotion!

Hi Stephanie,
What an awesome gift! I hope that your neighbor loves it. I hope you are having a beautiful day!

I do love all you write. I totally agree. I do mostly the same as you do but I am interested in your choice of scents. There are so many to choose from. I have long red ringlet type hair naturally but did try for years to pull it straight, put sellotape all over my face to pull the front bits straight and so on. Anyway I decided that I’m definitely not doing that any more a few years ago. Truly, the difference in my hair is amazing. Your hair is beautiful. I’m in Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴 and you are possibly in the USA 🇺🇸. Warm wishes from Lynda Frame

Thank you Lynda for the kind words! I’m so glad you’re enjoying your curls. As for how I choose essential oils, I find a few favorites and mix and match them for different things. Maybe sharing some of my favorite essential oils and what I use them for would be a good article. Wishing you a blessed day!
