Helping Others Declutter-The KonMari Method

May 17, 2016 by Dawn Michelle

Decluttering is an immensely powerful and life changing experience.  It is never something you should force on someone else, because they must be open to the transformation which is about to occur.  Clearing out the clutter in my home was one the best things that I could have ever done for my life.

Decluttering will shift how you see yourself and the world around you dramatically.  It will increase the value of your surroundings which will contain only what you love and cherish.  I shared my experience of decluttering while living with others who are not, and you will be surprised how living by example has more impact than you think.

It is difficult to explain the power of decluttering to someone who has never done it.  It must be experienced for yourself.

This past week I flew to my hometown to help my parents declutter the house in which I grew up using the KonMari Method.  I wish I had known about this method when I began this process for myself in 2010.  By using the KonMari Method, which is so efficient, you can achieve a fully decluttered home in six months or less versus what took me almost six years.  You can read all about the KonMari Method in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo.

With the KonMarie Method of tidying, you approach decluttering by categories beginning with the easiest category (clothing) and ending with the most difficult category (sentimental items).  My parents were overwhelmed seeing all of the items of a single category laid out carefully in one specific room.  To assist the process, the only thing that I did was help collect items in a category throughout the house while organizing the items that they felt “sparked joy” from what was going to be donated.  I gave no opinions on what to keep during the process, and did my best to keep them encouraged.

Every morning my mother collected all of the donated boxes and bags, and we took them to their appropriate donation location before embarking on the next category.  My father was a trooper during the process as he had never done this process before.  Keeping them encouraged and taking breaks when needed was necessary.  Eating well helped too!

Everyone has their own amount of clutter that contributes to a space.

No matter how neat you think you are, no one is 100% exempt from clutter.  I found this to be the truth when I started the decluttering process after getting married.  It is so easy to see someone else’s clutter.  Yet when we take responsibility for our own, that’s when the decluttering process really takes off.  Taking responsibility is so empowering, while taking any other approach gives your power away to another.

It was not possible to completely declutter my parent’s home in less than six days, yet hopefully they did get a great start to finishing this life changing process.  It was a pleasure to see the beauty of where I grew up, and also get a chance to spend time with my parents and visit friends.  Decluttering is a lot of work though.

You must be brave when facing your past, and also be brave to create space for the future.

If you desire to increase your income or get a new job, bring a new romantic partner into your life, have more clarity and energy, or simply love the home in which you live, begin the process of decluttering your home completely one time.  It may take you a month, it may take you six, but your life will never be the same afterwards.  It will open doors in more ways than can be explained.

Stop thinking about decluttering, just do it!  If you’re helping another through the process, be compassionate and be their cheerleader!

I just love reading your blog, every time you even mention decluttering I get such a boost of energy and I just want to get started with it. I’ve had some sessions of decluttering my home, and every time I get amazed at how much useless stuff I apparently have. And sometimes it feels as if I unconciously reclutter. Was this something you encountered when you started out as well?

      Hi Evelina Larsson,
When I started decluttering I also became aware of all of the things that I wasn’t using. The process also replaced the time I used to be shopping. During the process there is an moment of revelation where you won’t see your material items in the same way ever again. You also won’t fill the need to fill places that are now clear and you will enjoy the space emotionally and physically that this process created. This was my experience with decluttering. Thanks for your comment and I’m so glad that you’ve been enjoying these types of articles!

    Your parents are good sports.
I tried easing into this process. My mom isn’t quite ready to let go of many things for their sentimental value.( which is many of her things. 😉 I recommended the book and their was silence.
    But I realize it’s a process…
    Enjoyed your post.

      Hi Sandy,
Yes they are good sports and they have been keeping me updated with their progress which is sweet too. Because we started with clothing and everything down to socks and stockings was in front of them, they easily donated the unloved. Showing areas like the linen closet where much of it is unthought of shared a new perspective with the process too. Maybe the audio book would be a good option to share if you think your Mom may be interested. Thanks for your comment!

    Hello Dawn,

I loved this article of yours. I didn’t use the KonMari method, but I did get the book for my sister for her birthday this year. I shared your blog entry on my blog’s Facebook page, in the hopes of inspiring my readers to do the same decluttering of their lives.

    Inspire on,
    Roxanne.

      Hi Roxanne C,
Thank you for the compliment and also sharing this article! Decluttering is so powerful. I didn’t use the KonMari Method the very first time I decluttered, but I do use it now for tune ups. I find it so helpful. Have a wonderful summer!

  • My Fall/ Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe is up FINALLY! It's taken me a LONG time to get this capsule wardrobe together. Much of it is linen, thrifted, and a few pieces I sewed myself. I was really worried I wouldn't be prepared for winter back on the east coast, but I did get it together. Luckily winter in North Carolina is not even close to winter further north. 🍂🍁
My Fall/Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe consists of five tops, three skirts, five dresses, three sweaters, three coats, two pairs of shoes, a scarf, bag, and belt. 🍂🍁 This #capsulewardrobe is still #modest and should definitely appeal to the #linenlover. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🍂🍁 Much love! 🍂🍁

  • My love for linen dresses hasn’t stopped. But since our big move from Los Angeles, CA to Raleigh, NC the budget for them has. Luckily I purchased a great drop shoulder linen top a year ago that I created a pattern from.
🕊
With this pattern I’ve made a top and two dresses so far. One of the dresses is in my spring/summer capsule, yet the dress I’m sharing today is for fall/winter. Today I wanted to share a bit of the process for making this latest dress on Minimalist Beauty.

  • I haven't posted many things on food/nutrition on the blog or even here for a long time since I've been figuring things out myself. One thing that I've been doing in the last few months is fermenting all grains, beans, and legumes. 🌿 I had stopped eating them all together because of the phytic acid that they contain which can really limit your diet. Fermenting grains, beans, and legumes makes a huge difference. If this is something you'd be interested in hearing more about just let me know. 🌿This delicious dinner is piled high with mixed greens, basmati rice, black beans, avocado, and a rather large mound of raw minced garlic which is my warrior food against getting sick while the weather is changing here in NC. #fermenting #minimalistbeautyeats #foodasmedicine
  • My most updated skin care regimen along with the HUGE benefits using only oils high in linoleic acid for six years in my skin care routine on the blog today. Wishing all if you a beautiful weekend! 💞Dawn Michelle

  • I never thought I would actually say this but, I'm really enjoying the bare walls of our new apartment. After the stress and chaos of moving our family across the country, I've noticed that bare walls allow me space to think. 🌿 We're constantly bombarded with information, and some of it we create ourselves. It's all much more than I can comfortably handle. 🌿 Just sharing some thoughts on minimalism and decor on the blog today. Pictured is part of my son's creative space. Hope you're having a great week! 🌿 #simpleliving #minimalistbeauty #minimalistdecor
  • Moving is always challenging. No one is exempt. Our family of three (plus our dog) recently relocated from Los Angeles, California to Raleigh, North Carolina. We made a stop in Virginia to spend time with family as well as recoup from the first part of our move. We then planned what we could for our new location.
🕊
This entire move has been a true testimony of faith since I’ve only been to Raleigh once as a teen, and we chose our apartment online sight unseen. 🕊

  • We're currently selling and donating 95% of our things and relocating. 🕊What has surprised me more than anything else is when we decided to donate and sell practically everything, our possessions no longer had the same value to us. 🕊I'm extremely excited for this new beginning. 🕊Read more on minimalistbeauty.com. #minimalist #minimalistlifestyle #decluttering #newbeginnings 🕊(FYI... During this transition @iamAZUHA will be on a summer vacation for a few weeks beginning Wednesday June 19th. So if you need to restock on the AZUHA Red Raspberry Skin Elixir go for it.)
  • Yes I did it again. I was planning to grow it long, but things changed. I blame it on being a busy mom, but I've been eyeing this cut for a few years now. All the details on how I cut my own hair in a very simple way is up on Minimalist Beauty... Linen dress by @cottoncandy_by_romana
