A Simple Recipe + Tips For Healing Body Acne

September 23, 2016 by Dawn Michelle

If you’re familiar with Minimalist Beauty you know I do my very best to keep it real.  If you are dealing with body acne and acne scars, your body is begging for a lifestyle change not only for a topical solution.  Although my lifestyle approach to healing body acne is similar to clearing up acne on the face, I have my favorite DIY recipe that I use specifically for the body.  Today I want to share with you how I address body acne and the scars that often come with it.

1. Acne Is A Symptom Of Toxicity

When we have acne on our face or on our body, it is simply a sign that toxins are overloaded inside of our body, and are unable to be eliminated through our digestive system.  When our digestive system is out of wack, these toxins will try to exit through our skin which is our largest organ.  The more toxins that can’t be eliminated, the more acne we have.

In my previous article, a reader asked me what was the one thing that helped me to heal my skin the most.  Changing my diet by incorporating abundant amounts of raw fruits and vegetables was most likely not the exact answer she may have wanted to hear, but it has been the truth.  I will not say one diet is the best for all, but I will say that processed foods, refined sugar, and genetically modified foods are not your friends.

I’ve gone into greater details on these topics throughout the blog so I won’t here.  Instead I’ll link to the related articles which may be of interest to you.  Becoming your own nutritionist will not only save you money in the long run by improving your health, but it will also be a major game changer in the appearance of your skin.

2. Using High Linoleic Oils For Acne

By doing tons of research and being my own guinea pig, I discovered that using oils high in linoleic acid on acne prone skin helped to balance sebum production and composition.  I started using high linoleic oils for my skin in 2013.  When I shared this information, it has been the most frequently visited article on my blog ever since.  I never imagined it to have such a huge response.  So many have shared how this information has helped them which is amazing too.

If you are experiencing body acne, think about using a high linoleic carrier oil as a body lotion.  My two favorite body oils are organic grapeseed oil and organic rosehip seed oil.  It may take a moment to find what oil works best for your skin, so I always suggest trying one oil at a time before creating an oil mix.  You want to make sure that your skin loves an oil before making a concoction and not knowing exactly which ingredient is working or not.

3. DIY Dead Sea Salt Scrub

I honestly don’t use natural soaps or body washes on my entire body and only on the “hot spots”.  I am chemically sensitive to most commercial products and have found it much easier to make my own.  I make gentle DIY body care which does not effect the pH balance of my skin or create contact dermatitis.  I’ve made clay and oatmeal washes as well as my favorite DIY Dead Sea Salt Scrub.

Have you ever noticed how amazing your skin looks after a beach holiday?  I believe this has everything to do with the healing properties of sea salt, not to mention your relaxed state of mind and getting vitamin D from the sun.  To create this DIY Dead Sea Salt Scrub mix equal parts of dead sea salt, with vegetable glycerin.  Dead sea salt is the best kind of sea salt for this simple recipe because it is extremely mineral rich and very fine.  Regular sea salt will be good though too.

I specifically use vegetable glycerin for this scrub instead of oil because it will not cause the shower to be slippery.  Vegetable glycerin moisturizes the skin without leaving any residue, plus is makes a great base for this dead sea salt scrub.  If your skin is raw from harsh topicals, allow it to heal first before using this scrub.  Salt on wounds is no fun.

I only use this scrub on my body and never on my face.  The skin on our face is much more delicate and deserves to be treated gently.  You can use this scrub as often as you like depending upon how your skin responds.  It will help to prevent acne and soften acne scars.

4. Use Soft Microfiber Cloths For The Body Too

Let’s say that you actually have a favorite soap or body wash and desire to continue using it.  Well then go for it!  We all have to find what works best for our skin and personal preferences.

I’ve raved so much about soft microfiber cloths with oil cleansing and in general.  The texture of my skin changed dramatically when I incorporated these cloths into my skin care regimen.  Swap out your loofah or regular washcloth for a soft microfiber cloth.  These cloths will help to gently exfoliate the skin and enhance the properties of your favorite soap or body wash.

5. Drink Even More Water & Gentle Body Detoxes

With even gentle body detoxes experiencing body acne was part of my healing crisis.  Drinking tons of water helped tremendously.  Squeezing lime juice in my water helps me to drink even more water throughout the day.  You can even infuse your water with fruit in the refrigerator overnight.  I love to infuse my water with fresh fruit, but often forget so lime juice is easier for me.

You can not fill your body with processed foods and drinks then expect to have good health and beautiful skin.  Even if it looks like someone else can, I wouldn’t trust your eyes to tell you everything that is going on inside of their body.  I hope that these tips will be helpful to you, and please be patient along the way.  I’ve learned so much from tuning into my body more during this journey.

Healing is a constant process to embrace.

I suffer from acne and have done so for years. Some products help more, some less, and certainly my period and hormones do not help. But I love food (yes, all those bad things you mentioned) so much. I just will need to change eating habits and see if there is change. How long do you suggest changing the diet for to see if it is food-related?

      Hi Char,

Watch the documentary Hungry For Change on Netflix if you can. I wrote about it in the article on nutrition which I also linked above. I love food too, yet I love feeling and looking better from eating healthy organic food.

I have noticed that the healthier I’ve eaten over the years, the more that my taste buds have expanded and changed. When I’ve eaten a processed food since changing my diet, it no longer has that “life changing” addictive tone it used to. I’ve also noticed that I don’t break out at that time of the month.

Negative emotions can also impact the appearance of our skin. I hope that all of this info will be helpful to you and please keep us posted on how things work out for you. Best wishes!

I too suffered from acne, well beyond my teenage years, and I completely agree with you about diet and lifestyle changes being essential. Awesome post as usual. Finding what works for one’s own skin is best.

I laughed when I read that your recipe won’t make the shower slippery. Oil based scrubs are super dangerous in the shower…not only for myself but for unfortunate family members who took a shower before the tub was cleaned…ask me how I know 😀

      Hi Himawari,
Oil based products really aren’t ideal for bath and shower use unless you plan to clean the tub or shower immediately afterwards. I also worry about slipping myself so I’ve avoided the issue all together. Thanks for the compliment too!

Thank you for all of your suggestions! I’ve began using oils to cleanse my face again and my skin loves it! I’d like to make clay washes for my body instead of using castile soap. One thing I noticed is that Microfiber was mentioned as a good option. It is made out of plastic. Bamboo is a great sustainable alternative:

      Hi @tothediaspora,
I am curious if these cloths will remove dirt and makeup with just water. I am aware microfiber cloths aren’t 100% eco friendly despite being able to be reused over and over again. Yet they are still unlike any other cloth I have used to date, and they help minimize pores as well as remove cleansing oils thoroughly or be used with only water. I would love to find a more eco option.

Motherhood is intensely challenging, beyond humbling, and at times you just want the day to be over then realizing that you’ll be back at it the next day. It never ends and there isn’t much reprive. It’s been on my heart to share some encouragement to any mother who will read this. I pray this will bless you in some way. The link is in my profile!

Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a m Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a multitude of medicinal properties along with being a prominent spice in many cultural dishes. For starters, fenugreek seeds are packed with protein for strengthening strands, mucilage for moisturizing and soothing the scalp while detangling the hair, and most importantly nicotinic acid which may minimize hair shedding while soothing scalp issues. Fenugreek seeds are also anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal which is beneficial for soothing a dry irritated scalp as well as high in iron. 🍂

These little seeds are a win win for natural hair care and can be used in various ways. I’ve used fenugreek seeds in my beauty regimen on and off for years. Today I wanted to share four easy ways you can incorporate fenugreek in your hair regimen to promote healthy hair growth. The link is in the profile. 🍂

God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture was taken before they removed the bricking which was VERY NOISY to say the least. We haven’t been completely able to avoid the beginning of the construction process, but I honestly think it’s a good thing. This way we can remain GRATEFUL throughout the entire process. GRATITUDE during LIFE’S IMPERFECTION develops CONTENTMENT. That is one thing I work on daily. If you missed our “We’re Moving Again” testimony it’s on the blog. 🌿🍁🍃

Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the wee Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the week. I make muffins for Saturday’s breakfast (either corn bread, pumpkin, or banana bread muffins) to have with fruit, a big crockpot dinner for the weekend (beans & rice bowls, lentils and sweet potato stews, or a big veggie and red potato stew) to serve with bread, tortillas, grains, and/or salad depending on the dish, and I’m usually putting orders together to go out for @iamazuha today too. All the while I’m also making other food for the day. 🍂🥧🍁

Friday’s are crazy because of the usual responsibilities, but mainly because I really want to relax a bit over the weekend. Over this past year I’ve worked really hard to create systems to make working from home and being a homemaker easier. Homemaking really is like running a small boutique bed and breakfast hotel. It takes planning ahead, having a solid system, financial planning, commitment, and a lot of love. I’ve been learning to really enjoy this process. Just like everybody else I’ve been baking more this year than ever. Very rewarding. 🍂🥧🍁

Wishing all of you a beautiful and blessed weekend!

We could all use an IMMUNE BOOST right now. Here’s a simple juice recipe that I make for just that. I call it SPICY APPLE JUICE and my three (almost four) year old drinks it up no problem! 🍎

I simply juice 2 WHOLE medium/large APPLES (3 small apples pictured) + 3 CLOVES of GARLIC in a slow masticating juicer for one immune boosting serving. Yes I do include the core as it has many health benefits. 🍎

After having my 1st official winter back on the east coast last year, RAW GARLIC was how I made it through without getting sick at all while caring for sick family members. 🍎

Since then I juice garlic in many of my juice recipes or mince up multiple cloves as dinner toppings for chickpea pasta, beans and rice bowls, and stews. What I LOVE most of all is hearing my son say, “More Juice?” Proud Mama!!!! 🍎

I started wearing linen clothing because it’s ex I started wearing linen clothing because it’s extremely practical. Linen is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics on the market. Linen is also considered the world’s strongest natural fabric. After tiring of purchasing new clothing every season for my heavily worn small capsule wardrobe, it just made sense to look for mid and heavy weight linen garments that could be worn year round and layered that actually lasted.
🍃

Linen clothing can last up to 2-3 decades if properly cared for. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but have finally found a simple method for caring for my linen garments. (Link in profile.)
