5 Tips To Improve Gut Health

November 13, 2015 by Dawn Michelle

Our overall health begins with gut health.  A healthy body, beautiful skin, luscious hair, our ideal body weight, abundant energy, and restful sleep is all benefited by a healthy gut and a healthy diet.  Today I want to share some tips for a healthy digestive system that has been literally life changing for me.  Having a wonderfully working digestive system is EVERYTHING that it’s cracked up to be!

1. Eat REAL Food + Incorporate Live Enzyme Rich Foods

I have watched so many documentaries on health and diet.  One thing that they all have in common is that processed foods are not your friend.  No one thrives on processed foods simply because processed foods have absolutely no nutritional value, and instead provide the body with 100% empty calories.  Processed foods also contain synthetic lab created chemicals and other toxins that actually kill the good bacteria in our digestive systems.  This later creates inflammation and becomes other body ailments and diseases.

I used to buy organic gluten-free quinoa/corn pasta.  That was until I realized that there were absolutely no nutrients in the pasta in terms of vitamin and minerals, only empty calories.  Although the pasta was organic and gluten-free, it added no nutrients to my diet and was therefore unnecessary.  Now I just make organic quinoa instead which has the calories, but also is protein rich with vitamins, and minerals.  I also stopped buying packaged food in general, and buy organic produce and bulk foods to create my meals from scratch.  It takes a bit of time, but it’s less time at the doctor’s later.  Learn how to become your own nutritionist!

2. Detox

There are many different ways to detox the body.  One of the easiest ways is to eliminate all processed foods and other toxins from ones diet, and replace them with live enzyme rich foods instead.  By simply incorporating raw foods into your diet, your body will naturally detox.  Also by eliminating processed sugars (meaning everything that is not fruit), as well as minimizing alcohol consumption will give your liver a major needed rest.  Other ways to detox are juice fasting, hydrotherapy, and using herbs.  In my opinion creating a healthy eating lifestyle is the best approach.

3. Your Best Food Lifestyle

Choosing the best way to eat for your body can be trial and error, but is worth finding out.  Unconsciously eating anything that is marketed as food just because you only live once isn’t going to honestly serve you in the long run.  I’m not going to tell anyone exactly how they should eat.  We are all so uniquely different.  Even those with similar curly hair don’t thrive on the same hair regimen, so why would all of our bodies thrive on the exact same diet.  No ones bodies thrives on crap though!

There are so many eating lifestyles such as paleo, raw, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, etc.  Try whatever eating lifestyle which resonates with you, yet add tons of fruits and vegetables in with it.  My only advice is to leave anything packaged, bottled, and manufactured alone unless it is a single ingredient item.  You can learn to make your own sauces and dressings without the sugar, excessive sodium, and other unnessesary ingredients that your body does not need.  You can also make healthy desserts like this or this.  Plus it is so satisfying to create your own anyway.

4. Encourage Healthy Elimination

No one has time to be in the bathroom all day everyday, nor be worried about it.  Been there done that, and I have better things to do.  Changing my diet by eliminating all the cute processed foods and incorporating more raw live foods in my diet made a HUGE difference.  I also added two supplements which gave my other efforts an incredible boost without dependency.  These two supplements are systemic enzymes and food grade diatomaceous earth.

Systemic enzymes are anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrosis, blood cleansing, immune system modulating, and virus fighting for the entire body.  They definitely give all of the bodily functions a helping hand including the digestive system.  You can read more about systemic enzymes in detail here.

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally formed sedimentary rock that is extremely mineral rich.  It is composed of 85% silica which is vital to every organ in the body while promoting skin and heart health.  Diatomaceous earth is also an internal cleanser as it can remove harmful bacteria and parasites from the digestive system, as well as help to remove toxic debris from the lining of our digestive system.  With the walls of our digestive system free of debris, proper nutrients are better absorbed into the body.

(I usually take 1 tablespoon of diatomaceous earth in the morning with a glass of water usually 30-45 minutes before I take my systemic enzymes.  Please check with your physician before adding any new supplements.)

5. Hydrate Your Body

The easiest way to know if you are drinking enough water for your body is based on the color of your urine.  If your urine is dark yellow you are very dehydrated.  If your urine is a very light yellow to almost clear shade then you are hydrated.  Of course if you are eating beets or are taking a particular vitamin, the color will be obviously be different.  Yet drinking sufficient water is very important.

Hydrating your body properly can truly help with digestive health.  Eating fibrous enzyme rich foods without sufficient water only makes your body have to work harder.  It helps to drink the majority of your water in between meals versus with your meal.  When you drink water with your meal you are again making your digestive system work harder and diluting the digestive enzymes in your gut.

What is all comes down to…

When our digestive system is out of whack, inflammation and toxic impacted waste takes over.  Our body then gets bogged down and no longer assimilates the healthy foods we are eating properly.  Therefore the nutrients that we are eating are not being distributed to the rest of our body to provide optimal function.  Lethargy is a common symptom result.

True beauty is from a healthy lifestyle overall, not a prescription medication to treat acne, or solely a hair growth vitamin.  Beautiful skin and hair is an end result of a healthy body.  Chemicals in a bottle will not give you what you truly desire in the same way good health will.  When you change your lifestyle and focus on the full spectrum of health, your beauty naturally benefits.  Most importantly you will feel AMAZING and will be able to think clearly.

Your gut health is your beauty inside and out!

Great post, I agree on many things, some of the items even surprised me, because I knew them myself from a non-main stream source. Tempted to try the supplements. However, I’m not a big fan f supplement. My theory is that if you eat healthy, your body wouldn’t need any additional boosters. What do you think?

      Thanks Elena!
I’m not a big fan of supplements either, yet there are some that have proven to be very helpful in my healing journey. It honestly depends upon what you are trying to heal, where you are in your journey, and what you are dealing with. Use your intuition for what is best for you. Thanks so much for your comment too!

    Hello Dawn Michelle,

After being tired of being sick, I did some research, kicked all processed foods out of my house, and The Weston A. Price Foundation, “Blue Zones”, and “Longevity Villages” became my source for what to eat and how to move in order to be healthy & live a long, healthy, & happy life. In short, just like you outlined above, just eat real food, get outside a lot, and move a lot. Doing these things healed my gut, my body, and my mind: yes, it absolutely made me clear-headed and calm. The health of your gut affects every other single part of you.

Thanks, as always, for your posts!

I can’t wait to use both the DE and enzymes. I’ve been looking for better enzymes to take, this one looks amazing! Thank you for all you do. I’ve been reading your blog for a bit now and you’ve never let me down!

I’d love to hear what you think about DE and the systemic enzymes. These are the best systemic enzymes that I’ve tried so far. Thanks for the nice comment too!

      Hi Aladrin,
I currently haven’t been taking Estroblock. I probably used four or so bottles of Estroblock while my hormonal acne was flaring up. Vitamineral Greens is an amazing multivitamin/mineral supplement and can be put in my smoothies. I don’t like taking a ton of supplements at the same time and often will use certain ones that focus on what I am trying to heal at the time. It is important to listen to your body and its needs. Hope this helps!

There should be at least 90 minutes before /after eating or taking any supplements when taking DE. It will absorb the nutrients – might as well be tossing your healthy food/vitamins/meds out the window. My pharmacist recommended a dose mid-afternoon and before bed to ensure foods/supplements fully digested.

The brand is actually called Diatomaceous Earth. I will see about fixing the link too. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    Hey Dawn,

Congrats on the baby ☺️ I’m wondering why you prefer the enzymes over probiotics (which are pretty trendy these days). Don’t they serve the same purpose?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sharifa

      Hi Sharifa,
Thank you! They are both incredible for the body in different ways. I very quick description would do be that probiotics add healthy gut flora back into your body while enzymes help break down food and other imbalances to help remove them. This question is definitely article worthy. I hope that helps a bit though.

Motherhood is intensely challenging, beyond humbling, and at times you just want the day to be over then realizing that you’ll be back at it the next day. It never ends and there isn’t much reprive. It’s been on my heart to share some encouragement to any mother who will read this. I pray this will bless you in some way. The link is in my profile!

Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a m Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a multitude of medicinal properties along with being a prominent spice in many cultural dishes. For starters, fenugreek seeds are packed with protein for strengthening strands, mucilage for moisturizing and soothing the scalp while detangling the hair, and most importantly nicotinic acid which may minimize hair shedding while soothing scalp issues. Fenugreek seeds are also anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal which is beneficial for soothing a dry irritated scalp as well as high in iron. 🍂

These little seeds are a win win for natural hair care and can be used in various ways. I’ve used fenugreek seeds in my beauty regimen on and off for years. Today I wanted to share four easy ways you can incorporate fenugreek in your hair regimen to promote healthy hair growth. The link is in the profile. 🍂

God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture was taken before they removed the bricking which was VERY NOISY to say the least. We haven’t been completely able to avoid the beginning of the construction process, but I honestly think it’s a good thing. This way we can remain GRATEFUL throughout the entire process. GRATITUDE during LIFE’S IMPERFECTION develops CONTENTMENT. That is one thing I work on daily. If you missed our “We’re Moving Again” testimony it’s on the blog. 🌿🍁🍃

Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the wee Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the week. I make muffins for Saturday’s breakfast (either corn bread, pumpkin, or banana bread muffins) to have with fruit, a big crockpot dinner for the weekend (beans & rice bowls, lentils and sweet potato stews, or a big veggie and red potato stew) to serve with bread, tortillas, grains, and/or salad depending on the dish, and I’m usually putting orders together to go out for @iamazuha today too. All the while I’m also making other food for the day. 🍂🥧🍁

Friday’s are crazy because of the usual responsibilities, but mainly because I really want to relax a bit over the weekend. Over this past year I’ve worked really hard to create systems to make working from home and being a homemaker easier. Homemaking really is like running a small boutique bed and breakfast hotel. It takes planning ahead, having a solid system, financial planning, commitment, and a lot of love. I’ve been learning to really enjoy this process. Just like everybody else I’ve been baking more this year than ever. Very rewarding. 🍂🥧🍁

Wishing all of you a beautiful and blessed weekend!

We need to share the JOY of walking with God. The testimonies of glorifying God would just add encouragement that I know I need. I LOVE hearing of God making ways out of no way, giving us more hope and FAITH. 🌿🍂🍃

I was initially praying to God for ways to endure what we were about to go through while somehow someway making it nice for my family during the process. But God was already orchestrating a new way for us to not even have to endure it at all. Read my testimony on Minimalist Beauty... (link in profile) 🌿🍂🍃

We could all use an IMMUNE BOOST right now. Here’s a simple juice recipe that I make for just that. I call it SPICY APPLE JUICE and my three (almost four) year old drinks it up no problem! 🍎

I simply juice 2 WHOLE medium/large APPLES (3 small apples pictured) + 3 CLOVES of GARLIC in a slow masticating juicer for one immune boosting serving. Yes I do include the core as it has many health benefits. 🍎

After having my 1st official winter back on the east coast last year, RAW GARLIC was how I made it through without getting sick at all while caring for sick family members. 🍎

Since then I juice garlic in many of my juice recipes or mince up multiple cloves as dinner toppings for chickpea pasta, beans and rice bowls, and stews. What I LOVE most of all is hearing my son say, “More Juice?” Proud Mama!!!! 🍎

I started wearing linen clothing because it’s ex I started wearing linen clothing because it’s extremely practical. Linen is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics on the market. Linen is also considered the world’s strongest natural fabric. After tiring of purchasing new clothing every season for my heavily worn small capsule wardrobe, it just made sense to look for mid and heavy weight linen garments that could be worn year round and layered that actually lasted.

Linen clothing can last up to 2-3 decades if properly cared for. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but have finally found a simple method for caring for my linen garments. (Link in profile.)
