Tamanu Oil–A Phenomenal Beauty Gift

March 10, 2010 by Dawn Michelle

I discovered tamanu oil in Maui during my honeymoon this past October, and am so glad I did because it has miraculously changed my skin!  I spent around 10.00 for 1oz. while in Maui, yet found it on Mountain Rose Herbs in 2oz. bottles for almost half the price.  I have watched scars fade and heal quickly as well as no more breakouts.  My skin is brighter, clearer, smoother, and happier.  I am extra excited because it is 100% cold-pressed and organic, inexpensive, free from advertising, and actually works.  It is not the latest beauty elixir costing 45.00 or more, nor is there a fifteen year old beautiful model on its advertisement promoting anti aging properties, yet it does have them.

What makes tamanu oil so amazing?

Tamanu oil is extremely healing because it is antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory properties while possessing many antioxidants.  It completely regenerates new healthy skin.   Its extraordinary healing properties have been used to for patients with extreme burns and skin ulcers.  It is used to treat acne and acne scars,  blisters, diabetes sores, dry and scaly skin, bug bites and stings, stretch marks, athletes foot, age spots, shingles etc.  It has also been used to deodorize the body and feet.  The list goes on and on and on.

Tamanu oil is indigenous to tropical Southeast Asia and is a phenomenal gift to the world.

Tamanu oil has multiple uses with truly beneficial properties.  It can be used for both medical and beauty needs.  I use it as a daily moisturizer every morning and evening.  It is wonderful around the delicate eye area so there is no need for an eye cream.  With all of its regenerative qualities there is no need for beauty serums or irritating peels.  It easily absorbs into the skin without an oily residue.  Having an excellent, simple skin care product that works miracles and costs 80% less than using other organic skin care lines is simply icing on the yummiest cake.

Simple beauty at simple costs with miraculous results is one of my definitions of Minimalist Beauty.

There really isn’t a need to go to any retailer to fix any skin concern that Mother Nature has covered anyway. My only other input is to still drink tons of water, and eat plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables.  No matter how amazing a topically applied product can be, it is still so important to take wonderful care of your body from the inside out.  I believe that the skin especially on your face is a true reflection of what is going on inside your body and what emotions you carry with it.  Stay as light as possible emotionally as well as eat and exercise with loving intent.

You can find tropical tamanu oil for the best priced on Mountain Rose Herbs.

(Update: Please note that tamanu oil is higher in oleic acid and may be best for spot treating scars if experiencing extreme acne.  Read more on the oleic acid and linoleic acid balance in oils needed for acne prone skin here.)

    Dawn,

Thank you for providing such wonderful informative information on how to have beautiful natural hair. I have been natural since Nov of 2010 and love it. However, I have gone from product to product trying to find the right natural ones for my hair. When I spoke to your mom, who saw my parents, Minne and Sam Davis she shared your website with us, and I was truly excited and have printed this information to get started working more on my hair. Again, thank you and continue doing all that you are doing. You are beautiful and still often I think about you being as pretty as Ms. Tyra Banks. God Bless You.

    Hi Dawn,

I ordered the tamanu oil and rosehip oil. I’m new to both of them and how to incorporate them into my facial care routine of which i’m slowly building. I washed my face with raw honey and applied the tamanu oil last night and woke up this morning and did the same. I have noticed that my skin itches a little. So I was wondering exactly how do you use this i.e. alone, mixed with other oils? I DESPERATELY want to like this and use it as I hope it will help clear up my acne marks.

    Thanks,
    Keisha

      Hi Wanda,

I don’t currently have a recipe for under eye circles. I have them on and off myself, and to be honest I believe that it’s related to what’s going on with the stomach, liver, and kidneys. I’m always researching new things, yet this article here may be interesting to you. You’ll notice on other face charts for acupuncture or with other Chinese medicine that under eye circles are related to the stomach, liver, and kidneys although the information in this article linked above only references kidneys. Hope that this is somewhat helpful.

      Have a beautiful day!

    Hi Dawn,

I was wondering how you keep your face from becoming oily and shiny when using an oil moisturizer. Is there a specific amount one should use to avoid that?

Hi Falah, Only use a few drops and pat into the skin. You can also mix tamanu oil with jojoba oil which is a very light penetrating oil. Hope that helps!

    Hi Dawn,

I bought Tamanu oil and it was really thick green and smelled potent. Is that the real thing?

Hi Mendy, Yes that is a pretty accurate description of tamanu oil. I don’t mind it as is but if it feels too thick mix it with another amazing carrier oil like rosehips seed oil or jojoba oil. The healing properties of this oil are phenomenal which is why doctors have used it for burn patients. Best wishes!

Hi Jikar, I’ve only purchased tamanu oil already extracted from Mountain Rose Herbs so am not sure how to make the oil myself. I did a quick search online to possibly find info on how to extract the oil yet didn’t find anything. Wish I could be more helpful. Best wishes!

    Hi Dawm,
Can I use tamanu oil on my face with pimples and blackhead?
Will tamanu oil clog my pores?
Will it help clear my acne?
Due to very busy schedule I cannot use OCM ,so I use rahssoul clay to cleans my skin.My skin is dry and dehydrated but suffering from acne and pimples.
So I need a moisturizer that doesn’t clog my pores further.
Which sunscreen would be best for dry acne prone skin.
I need a sunscreen that acts as a moisturizer and sunscreen without clogging my pores leading to acne.
    Thanks,
    HK.

      Hi HK,
I learned much later that tamanu oil is higher in oleic acid which isn’t the best kind of oil for acne prone skin. You can see a list of oils high in linoleic acid which are amazing for acne prone skin here. You can also find great sunscreen options here. Hope this helps!

      Hi Kris,
I wrote about rosehip seed oil here and it is lighter in color and much sweeter in scent than tamanu oil. Tamanu oil has a very potent scent yet it is also a potent healing oil. Both are regenerative oils. Hope this helps!

Question… I’ve been researching Tamanu Oil and have discovered that the quality of the oil is much better if it’s Tahitian, rather than from Vietnam. You suggested Mountain Rose Herbs, which I purchased mine from anyway, but theirs comes from Vietnam. This is my first purchase from Mountain Rose Herbs, I hope it’s still great quality and will assist in fading my hyperpigmentation from picking. Do you have any thoughts regarding the locations and the quality?
    Thanks,
    Alicia

      Hi Alicia,
I honestly don’t know too much about this, but I do know the quality of ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs are really incredible. Rosehip seed oil is also really wonderful for skin rejuvenation as well. Best wishes!

    Hi,
First time on your site. Such great information- I will be reading for the next few days!
I wanted to ask -I used to suffer from acne but don’t anymore, the occasional spot.but I don’t have smooth skin, quite lumpy with big pores.
Do I stick to oils that are more linoleic for acne prone skin? As I have been using Coconut oil for oil cleansing. But I am reaching 40 so it can be dry and want to treat my fine lines.
Is carrot seed and frankinsense oil too much?
    Thank you from UK x

      Hi Sheri,
Welcome! Rosehip seed oil would be a better choice over coconut oil as coconut oil can clog pores for some. Rosehip seed oil is a high linoleic oil as well as very moisturizing. Adding carrot seed or frankincense essential oil to your carrier oil would be fine as well. Use up to 10 drops of essential oil to every 1 ounce of carrier oil. Best wishes!

Thanks for all of this information! I just ordered a bunch of the oils from MRH but forgot the Tamanu oil. I am looking for something to spot treat acne and old acne scars – are you saying now that this isn’t the best due to high oleic levels? Would it be better to spot treat with some essential oils (tea tree, frankinsense in the rosehip oil carrier?)

      Hi Nadia,
Yes I am no longer suggesting tamanu oil due to its high oleic acid content for acne prone skin. You can find more ideas on treating hyperpigmentation here and here. Frankincense essential oil would also be a great addition to your carrier oil too. I hope this helps!

I’ve just started reading your blogs, which are really interesting, and you may have covered this in another section. Apologies if you have. Please may I ask if you feel that tamanu oil would be better than rose hip oil for my 50 year old, relatively youthful looking face. My main aim it to preserve what I have for as long as possible. I’m also wondering whether hemp would help with elasticity. I’ve already started using microfibre cloths and my face already feels smoother. Thank you.

      Hi Janie,
Welcome to the site! Tamanu oil is great specifically for scars. It has a very strong scent though which makes me happy that you mentioned rosehip seed oil. Rosehip seed oil is incredible for rejuvinating and healing the skin while also having a very pleasant scent for a carrier oil. It will help with elasticity in the skin, evening out the skin, and a glowy complexion in general. Hemp seed oil is great too, but you may find rosehip seed oil to be really lovely. Hemp seed oil has a nutty scent. I’m glad that you are enjoying using microfiber cloths in your skin care regimen too. Best wishes and please keep us posted on how things work out!

    Hi Dawn
Thanks for replying. My gut Instinct was saying rose hip, so I’m glad that it’s your suggestion too. Please may I ask if you have a ‘search’ tool on your site as I can’t find one. Sorry if I’m missing the obvious. I’m reading all this great info, but I can’t always remember exactly where it was on the site.
I’m now an oil cleansing convert and I’m about to bite the bullet and venture into natural hair care too for my fine, limp, oilyish hair (I’m conjuring up a beautiful image, aren’t I 😉). Wish me luck!

      Hi Janie,
Yes best wishes on your natural hair care transition! Also I do have a search box in two places on the site. One is in the right sidebar which is visible when reading a single article. The second is in the middle column of the footer which is visible no matter what page you are on when looking at the site. I hope this helps!

  • My Fall/ Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe is up FINALLY! It's taken me a LONG time to get this capsule wardrobe together. Much of it is linen, thrifted, and a few pieces I sewed myself. I was really worried I wouldn't be prepared for winter back on the east coast, but I did get it together. Luckily winter in North Carolina is not even close to winter further north. 🍂🍁
My Fall/Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe consists of five tops, three skirts, five dresses, three sweaters, three coats, two pairs of shoes, a scarf, bag, and belt. 🍂🍁 This #capsulewardrobe is still #modest and should definitely appeal to the #linenlover. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🍂🍁 Much love! 🍂🍁

  • My love for linen dresses hasn’t stopped. But since our big move from Los Angeles, CA to Raleigh, NC the budget for them has. Luckily I purchased a great drop shoulder linen top a year ago that I created a pattern from.
🕊
With this pattern I’ve made a top and two dresses so far. One of the dresses is in my spring/summer capsule, yet the dress I’m sharing today is for fall/winter. Today I wanted to share a bit of the process for making this latest dress on Minimalist Beauty.

  • I haven't posted many things on food/nutrition on the blog or even here for a long time since I've been figuring things out myself. One thing that I've been doing in the last few months is fermenting all grains, beans, and legumes. 🌿 I had stopped eating them all together because of the phytic acid that they contain which can really limit your diet. Fermenting grains, beans, and legumes makes a huge difference. If this is something you'd be interested in hearing more about just let me know. 🌿This delicious dinner is piled high with mixed greens, basmati rice, black beans, avocado, and a rather large mound of raw minced garlic which is my warrior food against getting sick while the weather is changing here in NC. #fermenting #minimalistbeautyeats #foodasmedicine

  • I never thought I would actually say this but, I'm really enjoying the bare walls of our new apartment. After the stress and chaos of moving our family across the country, I've noticed that bare walls allow me space to think. 🌿 We're constantly bombarded with information, and some of it we create ourselves. It's all much more than I can comfortably handle. 🌿 Just sharing some thoughts on minimalism and decor on the blog today. Pictured is part of my son's creative space. • Moving is always challenging. No one is exempt. Our family of three (plus our dog) recently relocated from Los Angeles, California to Raleigh, North Carolina. We made a stop in Virginia to spend time with family as well as recoup from the first part of our move. We then planned what we could for our new location.
🕊
This entire move has been a true testimony of faith since I’ve only been to Raleigh once as a teen, and we chose our apartment online sight unseen. 🕊
