Summer is the perfect time to enjoy glowing effortless skin. Although I no longer wear the full heavy face of makeup that I used to when I worked in cosmetics, I still love a glamorous glowy complexion without unnecessary chemical toxins or a complicated application process. Here are my latest summer favorites in natural and organic makeup and how I use them.
1. 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer
Ingredients: Pigments of Peach, Apricot, Carrot, Pomegranate, Cocoa Bean, Goji Berry and Tomato, White Tea, Cucumber Juice, Aloe Juice, Acai Oil and Pomegranate Oil, Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate), Rice Starch, Candelilla Wax, Extracts of Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Grapefruit Seed, Japanese Honeysuckle, Goldenseal and Cinnamon
SUNSCREEN ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: 15% Titanium Dioxide and 10% Zinc Oxide
After cleansing the skin, I skip my usual moisturizing step and apply this all natural tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 in Mousse with my finger tips. This color matches my skin even better now that I’ve gotten some sun. In general I prefer to only use zinc oxide based sunscreens, yet I still love this tinted moisturizer from 100% Pure. I raved about 100% Pure Tinted Moisturizer before here.
2. 100% Pure Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer
Ingredients: Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Powdered Pigments of Cacao, Apricot, Peach, Pomegranate, Blackberry, Raspberry, Coffee, Papaya, Tomato, Black Tea and Acai, Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Lavender Flower Powder, Rosehip Oil, Avocado Butter, Mica (natural mineral shimmer), Vitamin A (a-palmitate), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
My 100% Pure Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer is in Cocoa Glow and it the best overall warming powder that I’ve found so far. For an easy day time look, using an EcoTools blush brush, I apply bronzer to my eyelids, cheeks, chin, bridge of my nose, and anywhere else the sun naturally hits my skin. On other occasions I will use this bronzer to contour my face. This bronzer has flecks of shimmer without getting too crazy. It is the perfect in between matte and shimmer natural bronzer.
Ingredients: Organic/Bio Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Organic/Bio Cera Alba (Beeswax), Silica, Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Organic/Bio Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Essential Oils & Natural Fruit Essences, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Boswellia Serrata (Frankincense)*, Organic/Bio Ocimum Sanctum (Tulsi/Holy Basil), Organic/Bio Nelumbo Nucifera (Lotus) Flower Petals [+/—: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Carmine (CI 75470)]
Orange blush was super hot last summer, yet amazing on my complexion all year round. Don’t get scared when you see the intensity of this cheek stain. This cheek stain by Vapour is buildable and can be sheered out as much as you like. There are three other multi-use colors with this cheek stain if a rich coral isn’t your color that are absolutely gorgeous.
This is a creamy blush tint that will give that natural glow. This is one of my absolute favorite makeup items. I love the ease and convenience of applying directly from the tube and blending with my fingers. I apply this cheek tint mainly to the apples of my cheeks and blend downwards and towards my ears. Applying the color this way gives a more youthful natural glow to the skin.
This product does contain carmine which I linked to the Cosmetic Database. Although it isn’t toxic, it does make this product no longer vegan. Carmine is in many cosmetics and is a pigment created from insects.
4. Zuzu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner in Raven
Ingredients: Aqua (Infusion of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice), Sorbitol, Cetyl Alcohol, Iron Oxides, Mica, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Bentonite, Bisabolol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Euphrasia Officinalis (Eyebright) Extract, Titanium Dioxide, Cellulose Gum, Hectorite, Potassium Sorbate
I haven’t found anything that gives my eyes the intensity of black liquid liner. This one by Zuzu Luxe is wonderful! Liquid eyeliner refines and defines the eye much easier than doing a full multi eyeshadow blending routine, although the two together is even better for that added drama. For summer I love to keep my makeup as natural and fresh as possible. A thin line of black liquid liner to the top lash line with a tiny flick at the outer corner is perfection!
I found Zuzu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner at Whole Foods and it also comes in six colors.
5. Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Lash Boosting Mascara
Ingredients: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Water *, Glycerin, Iron Oxides, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Water, Lactobacillus Bulgaricus Ferment Filtrate, Beeswax *, Jojoba Esters, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax *, Tapioca Starch *, Stearic Acid, Glyceryl Caprylate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice *, Cellulose Gum, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract *, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil *, Hydrolyzed Oryza Sativa (Rice) Protein, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract *, Saccharomyces/Copper Ferment, Saccharomyces/Iron Ferment, Saccharomyces/Magnesium Ferment, Saccharomyces/Silicon Ferment, Saccharomyces/Zinc Ferment, Leuconostoc/Aloe Barbadensis Leaf/Sorbus Aucuparia Fruit Ferment Filtrate, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Populus Tremuloides Bark Extract, Citric Acid May Contain: Titanium Dioxide
I tried this affordable easy to find drug store mascara by Physicans Formula and it works extremely well. I was out of 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara and wasn’t ready to do another full online order. Instead I popped into my local drug store and figured I would try this one.
The ingredients are no where near 100% perfect. You will notice in the ingredients that there is magnesium aluminum silicate which I am not happy about, yet also linked to the Cosmetic Database. This ingredient is rated as a 4 in toxicity, and I honestly wish that it wasn’t in the product at all. Aluminum powder is extremely toxic so when I saw this ingredient I was especially weary and for good reason. “Magnesium Aluminum Silicate is a complex silicate refined from naturally occurring minerals” and concerned to have neuro-toxicity and organ toxicity. ~Cosmetic Database
I will be purchasing another natural mascara soon, yet wanted to share a much better option than most mascaras on the market. The original formula which I tried when it first came out years ago also contains magnesium aluminum silicate, yet I like the overall results of this formulation.
6. Alba Botanica TerraGloss Tinted Lip Gloss
Ingredients: Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, brassica campestris/aleurites fordi oil copolymer, oleic/linoleic/linolenic polyglycerides, silica silylate, soybean glycerides, beeswax, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), silica, vanilla flavor, ammonium glycyrrhizate, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E).
May contain: Mica, iron oxides, titanium dioxide and manganese violet.
To finish off my summer look Alba Botanica TerraGloss does the trick and can be found in most drug stores. My favorite colors are Sienna, Kona, and Blaze. Above is the color Sienna and there are five total shades. This gloss is extremely cost friendly, moisturizing, and non-sticky. The pigments are also very rich for a gloss, but don’t expect it to replace lipstick if you’re a lipstick lover.
I linked ammonium glycyrrhizate, an ammonium salt, to the Cosmetic Database just in case you were curious what that ingredient was.
You have full control over exactly what is in your makeup if you make it yourself. I have found creating cosmetics to be fun and rewarding. A mix of natural store bought cosmetics and DIY makeup create the perfect balance for my lifestyle. I hope to be testing and reviewing more makeup soon. Stay beautiful!
