Rosehip & Carrot Seed Facial Serum Recipe for Mature, Dry or Damaged Skin

January 26, 2018 by Dawn Michelle

I often get asked how to mix carrier and essential oils to create a beautiful skin serum.  I wanted to repost this awesome recipe which I feel can easily get lost in the mix.  Feel free to modify this recipe with your favorite oils.  If you’re not big on DIY, check out my new organic skin care line AZUHA which I’ve created for all skin types based on oils high in linoleic acid for a radiant complexion.  The AZUHA Red Raspberry Skin Elixir has been getting great reviews!  Find FAQ’s on the elixir here.

Here is a wonderful facial serum recipe courtesy of my favorite online herbal beauty source Mountain Rose Herbs.  This rich healing oil is best for mature, dry, or damaged skin and includes both helichrysum and carrot seed essential oils which increase skin regeneration and heal hyperpigmentation.  It also contains pomegranate seed oil which is a powerful antioxidant and another skin regenerator very helpful for healing skin ailments such as eczema and psoriasis as well as rosehips seed oil which is widely used in natural skin care to treat wrinkles and premature aging.

Facial serums with high quality potent ingredients like this recipe will truly nourish the skin at a deep cellular level.

What you will need:

  • 1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) organic rosehip seed oil
  • 1/4 oz (1/2 Tbsp) organic jojoba oil
  • 1/4 oz (1/2 Tbsp) organic pomegranate seed oil
  • 5-10 drops vitamin E oil
  • 10 drops organic lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops organic helichrysum essential oil
  • 2 drops organic carrot seed essential oil
  • 1 0z glass bottle with dropper

1. Pour rosehips seed oil, jojoba oil, and pomegranate seed oil in a 1 oz clean glass bottle using a funnel.

2. Now add vitamin E oil, lavender essential oil, helichrysum essential oil, and carrot seed essential oil.

3. Gently shake to evenly mix the ingredients.

You can use this DIY facial serum as a daily moisturizer to rejuvenate and heal your skin.  Once you begin to use 100% pure natural carrier and essential oils for skin care, you will never turn to synthetic cosmetics that contain so many toxic chemicals and filler ingredients ever again.  Nothing compares to what comes from nature!

Read more about formulating your own DIY anti-aging facial serums in this article, and see more on DIY and natural skin care here and the latest details of my extremely simple beauty regimen here.  Enjoy your day!

Hi Dawn, I don’t know if you or anyone might know but I have been using organic rosehip seed oil on my body (neck to toes) then I apply lotion, ( mountain rose herbs) and I keep it in the refrigerator. I have noticed that my pajamas have a smell to them even after I wash them them , but my regular clothes does not. I think it’s the oil that gives my pj’s that smell, am wondering if anyone has experience that

      Hi Carla,
If I use an oil on my body, I don’t use a lotion too. I actually don’t use lotions or oil all over by body daily anymore and mainly apply it to my legs after shaving. You could be soiling your clothes with too much product which is why you are noticing a smell. It may be possible that if you are experiencing extremely dry skin it could be that your body wash/soap is dehydrating your skin.
      Hope this helps!

    Love seeing this! Congratulations.
Question: Is it possible to take garden roses and create a skin soothing rose oil? How do I harvest the oil and have you found it effective as a dry, anti-aging DIY treatment? I look forward to your reply. Thx.

      Hi Jessica,

You can make a rose infused oil using dried rose petals and buds with your favorite carrier oil, yet this is different than creating an essential oil. You need to allow fresh rose petals and buds to dry for at least 24 hours. (It is extremely important that the petals and rose buds are completely dry so that your oil infusion does not mold.) Then you can follow the instructions in this article with the dried rose petals. Rose is a wonderful ingredient in skin care!

    Hey Dawn,

Would this help with pitted scars by any chance? They’re aren’t many of them (over a small area), just enough for me to notice. I believe the scars are boxcar and vary from moderate to shallow.

    Thanks a million!

      Hi Kat,
Carrot seed oil and rosehip seed oil are both amazing for skin regeneration. Rosehip seed oil is also high in linoleic acid which is great for mature and acne prone skin. If you still encounter breakouts then this article may help a lot too.

I have found natural oils to be extremely helpful for healing my skin, it is a bit of trial and error plus intuition deciding the best oil for your skin. I think thaw article I linked above will help you though. It also takes time for our skin to heal itself so be patient with the process and take the best care of your skin as possible.

      Hi Lynne,

I only use carrier oils that are high in linoleic acid because I am acne prone. I won’t even use these types of oils on my hair or body as I have still broken out from even that. You can read more about oils high in linoleic acid versus oleic acid here.

Argan oil is a carrier oil that is higher in oleic acid. I have heard many wonderful things about argan oil, yet won’t personally be trying it out because I am acne prone. Have a beautiful day!

    Hi Dawn Michelle,

I started using jojoba oil with carrot and pepermint oil for my skin and maybe I’ll try rosehip oil too. I so like the carrot oil as it is nurishing to my dry and delicate skin. I find that other oils can be drying if left alone like olive, castor, and grapeseed oil. I find that apricot oil leaves my skin feeling creamy and smooth and I often use it with a few drops of amla and lemon balm oil in black tea as a facial and hair moisturizer

    Hi Dawn Michelle,
This formula looks really good! I have Nordic blonde skin that is so dry that it actually becomes hard and encrusted everywhere but face and torso if I don’t moisturize every day. Also, my keratosis pilaris is very bad now that at age 64 my skin is sooooo dry. I even have it on my face now. The problem is, moisturizers sting so much I want to avoid them. I have just discovered Desert Essence unscented hand and body moisturizer, and it seems simple and pure enough for me to order it. But I also want some kind of serum as well.
This one looks great, but I will need to substitute something for the lavender oil, as I am allergic to it.
Any suggestions will be very welcome.
    Thank you so much,
    Melissa

      Hi Melissa,
You can replace lavender essential oil for chamomile essential oil if you like. Also sometimes our facial cleansers contribute to dehydrating and drying out our skin. You may be interested in some simple facial cleansers that are listed here. You may also be interested in herbal facial steaming to increase moisture in your skin.

Hi Dawn – your revoke sounds good but can you help me with a few doubts?
    – are 2 drops of carrot seed essential oil enough? I heard that carrot seed oil is also a good sunscreen so does that mean I can avoid using sunscreen now?
    – also how many drops do I use of the serum after cleansing and toning?
    – am 30 years old and am wondering if I new to add moisturizer after applying serum in morning?
    – can I use this serum as eye serum as well?
    – also can I use ONLy this as my night treatment or do I need anti aging products?

      Hi ManiS,

This recipe is for a 2 oz facial serum. Essential oils are extremely potent volatile oils which are different than carrier base oils. If you would like to add more carrot seed essential oil to this serum mix you can. Carrot seed essential oil is a wonderful essential oil.

As for whether you can avoid using sunscreen with this serum is truly up to you, yet I am not sure what the SPF rating would be for this serum. This serum recipe already has anti-aging properties naturally so you would be good using this morning and night. Hope this helps!

      Hi Nephthys,
I wrote this article about oils that are wonderful for acne prone skin and why. I would choose an oil that you are intuitively led to and try one oil at a time to make sure that your skin absolutely loves it before creating a serum. You can use the recipe above as a template for creating your own serum for acne prone skin yet with only high linoleic acid oils which I talk about in that article I just linked to. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! Actually this recipe contains incredible ingredients for healing acne scars. Rosehips seed oil, lavender essential oil, helichrysum essential oil, and carrot seed oil are all amazing for healing scars and skin regeneration overall. If you are acne prone you may want to swap out jojoba oil for grapeseed oil. I explain more in detail why here. This article linked is valuable information I discovered after writing about tamanu oil.

    Hello Dawn,

I recently descovered your site and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve been reading. I’m 28 and have oily/acne skin, though my acne isn’t as bad as it used to be. Mostly small whiteheads and blackheads. I was using argan oil until I read your article about oils for acne prone skin and have since switched to rosehip seed oil with great success. I have been using sweet almond oil for my hair and so far it hasn’t caused breakouts but I wanted to eliminate all oils high I oleic acid just to be safe. I was wondering if this serum would be good for an all over moisturizer as well as for my hair. I’m hoping I can find one combination of carrier oils and essential oils that I can use all over my body.

Tea tree oil is a potent essential oil with great antibacterial properties. I enjoy using lavendar essential oil on the face which is more gentle yet still has antibacterial properties. Regardless of what essential oils that you use only add 10 drops of essential oil to every one ounce of carrier oil. Hope this helps!

You could use pretty much all of the ingredients in this serum minus the jojobs oil for anti aging acne prone skin. Also you may want to omit the vitamin E oil as that can sometimes cause breakouts for different people. You can read more on oils for acne here. Try one carrier oil at a time to ensure that you skin works well with it. Best wishes!

You can use natural oils for your skin twice daily or more if needed. Carrot seed oil is an essential oil and rosehip seed oil is a carrier oil. If you are interested in creating your own mix only use up to 10 drops of an essential oil with 1 ounce of a carrier oil. Bothe of these oils are amazing for what you are looking for. Best wishes!

Definitely use whatever essential oils that you love. Geranium is a really great option. Also when you mix more fragile carrier oils with less fragile ones it helps them last longer. Essential oils also do this in my opinion. Best wishes and I’m so glad you are enjoying the site.

      Hi Angela Cantlin,
I am sure that you can. I don’t personally make face or body creams simply because once you add water, aloe vera, or a hydrosol into the recipe, you must add a chemical preservative which I don’t use to create a long shelf life. When I make hair gel with flaxseeds and water, I refrigerate it, use it up quickly (within a week), and never worry if it goes bad since the ingredients are extremely inexpensive. To create a creamy consistency for a face cream you could mix in shea butter or another natural butter of your choice. I hope this helps!

This serum recipe would be very helpful for dry skin. Also consider if your body is dehydrated and consider incorporating flaxseed oil or another form of Omega 3 oil into your diet to moisturize your skin from the inside out. You can find other oils beneficial for acne prone skin to be applied topically here. I wish you the best in resolving this.

Hello, I was just reading the ingredients for Rosehip and carrot seed oil serum. My question is I keep reading to stay away from Rosehip if one has oily skin. I have oily and acne prone skin also dealing with hyperpigmentation. This won’t break me out and make me oilier will it? Thank you

      Hi C. Neal,
If you are acne prone I always suggest using a high linoleic oil and also trying only one oil at a time to ensure that your skin responds well to it. You can do a patch test as well before applying to your entire face. Also using oils for your skin actually helps to reduce oil and sebum production. It is when you are drying your skin with harsh cleansers etc. that the skin will produce more oils. Lastly I’ve written a bunch of articles on skin principles and healing the body from the inside out which shares my approach to skin care and health. I hope this is helpful to you!

    Hi Dawn
Over the past few months I’ve lost quite a lot of weight (42lbs ish), with a bit more to go. Whilst I know that it’s very likely that I will have saggy skin at the end of my journey, I’ve been oiling and moisturising like mad to give my skin the best chance of recovering. I’ve been following your advice for face and hair cleansing and now I would like to move on to more natural products for my body too. I would really like to keep it simple and use the above recipe for both face and body but wonder whether you would recommend that I use a different blend for my body. I would really appreciate some more of your great advice. Thanks a lot.

      Hi Laurice,
This recipe is wonderful, yet you can always swap out the jojoba oil for an oil that is higher in linoleic acid if you are acne prone. You can read more on that here. With very sensitive skin, it may be helpful to also try out carrier oils individually to ensure that your skin loves it before creating an oil serum. I hope this helps!

i love this recipe. i just made it and used it n love the feel of it so much. so excited. i have dry skin usually with redness on the cheeks.

i wanted to know if to put my raw ingredients in the fridge and also my diy serum in the fridge or not. i thought adding carrot and vit e extends the shelf life? what is the shelf life of this product?

this product made 30ml and i only used 3 drops so im sure this is going to last for ages! dont want it to go off! xxx

      Hi Sofia,
When you mix oils with other oils/butters and no water, hydrosol, or liquid ingredients, you don’t need preservatives or to refrigerate. Also by adding vitamin E and essential oils, you have already extended the shelf life of the carrier oils. I am so glad that you are enjoying this recipe too. Have a beautiful day!

    Hi there,
I’m new in DIY serum/moisturizer. Is there a reason why you only use 2 drops carrot oil in 2 tbs of carrier oil (including rosehip oil)? I have a cheat sheet which recommends 30 drops of EO per tablespoon for adult. Please let me know your thought on this. Thank you

      Hi Maple,
In general I always recommend 10 drops of essential oil to every 1 ounce of carrier oil. Every essential oil is not going to be the same though. For example, you may be able to use more lavender essential oil on the skin than tea tree essential oil. Lavender oil is much more gentle on the skin than tea tree oil. Essential oils are very strong. Less is usually more when it comes to essential oils. I hope this helps!

Actually this recipe above is perfect especially since it contains rosehip seed oil and carrot seed essential oil. Both are extremely powerful at rejuvenating the skin at a cellular level. It is also extremely important to eat nutrient rich whole foods to help this process from the inside out. I shared more on this here. I hope that this will be helpful for you!

I’ve been studing ingredients for anti aging oil blends and it’s such a natural way to care for our skin. There are so many more oils that could be added to this blend. It’s not easy to know what all to use since various anti aging blends use different ones. I want to make my own blend and I think I’d like to add some of the following I’ve read about, that are all great for the skin. Geranium, sandalwood, patchouli, ylang ylang, rosemary, fennel, lemon and evening primrose. Imagine the cost to purchase all of those oils but they would last a long time. Thanks for this recipe and best wishes to you and your readers.

      Hi Emily T,

I honestly don’t have an exact shelf life for this recipe, yet this recipe does not contain any water/hydrosols therefore does not need an extensive preservative system. This recipe is only for a 1 ounce oil which also contains vitamin E and essential oils which helps to extend the shelf life of the oil ingredients.

Most carrier oils on their own will last for a year or more. Other carrier oils are more sensitive than others and need refrigeration. In this recipe rosehip seed oil is a more sensitive oil, yet when mixed with more stable oils such as jojoba and pomegranate oil as well as vitamin E and essential oils, the oil is stablized. I hope this helps!

Love your blog.Made a recipe similar to yours just last week.Used half argan oil, half rosehip seed oil and carrot essential oil.It does make my skin slightly red with some very tiny rash looking like patches, which disseapears by morning. Wondering if this is normal. I also got the anti age blend from plant therapy, and while I love this company, this blend felt like burning and small red dots (petechiae like) appeared all over.
I am trying to get rid of some weird wrinkles that started to appear less than 2 months ago on my right side of the face,on and just under my jawline.
They are 3 in total, parallel with each other and about half an inch away from each other.I googled but couldn’t find anything similar with what I have.
Unfortunately I do have a tendency to whenever I bend my head,it will be slightly to the right.I also keep my phone on my right shoulder whenever I must talk and run after the kids.Every single time I bend my head, even slightly, the lines get deeper.
Any ideas how to get these stubborn lines out of my face?
I am 38 ,don’t use makeup and have a super healthy diet (had it for pretty much all of my life),but suffer from hashimoto’s, celiac and alopecia areata since teenage years.

      Hi Ann,
I’ve never used argan oil so I don’t have personal experience with it. I also suggest readers especially with sensitive skin to test only one oil at a time before creating any oil mix to ensure that their skin likes the oil. That way you can also make necessary changes to the recipe if needed. As for wrinkles I would increase your water and healthy fat intake. Also up your nutrition even more if possible. Lastly I shared my anti-aging skin care regimen here. I hope this helps!

    Hi Dawn,
I’m trying to make an anti ageing serum based on what I’ve read from your blog. I’m using oils high in Linoleic acid because my face is prone to breakouts easily… Here’s what I want to use:
    Evening Primrose oil
    Rosehip oil
    Pumpkin seed oil
    Carrot seed oil
    Lavender Essential oil
    Helichrysum Essential oil
    Frankincense oil

Please I don’t really know what quantity of oils to mix – would you be kind enough to help me with the measurement? Also, is this combination good to use morning and night? Thanks so much!

Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the wee Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the week. I make muffins for Saturday’s breakfast (either corn bread, pumpkin, or banana bread muffins) to have with fruit, a big crockpot dinner for the weekend (beans & rice bowls, lentils and sweet potato stews, or a big veggie and red potato stew) to serve with bread, tortillas, grains, and/or salad depending on the dish, and I’m usually putting orders together to go out for @iamazuha today too. All the while I’m also making other food for the day. 🍂🥧🍁

Friday’s are crazy because of the usual responsibilities, but mainly because I really want to relax a bit over the weekend. We could all use an IMMUNE BOOST right now. Here’s a simple juice recipe that I make for just that. I call it SPICY APPLE JUICE and my three (almost four) year old drinks it up no problem! 🍎

I simply juice 2 WHOLE medium/large APPLES (3 small apples pictured) + 3 CLOVES of GARLIC in a slow masticating juicer for one immune boosting serving. Yes I do include the core as it has many health benefits. 🍎

After having my 1st official winter back on the east coast last year, RAW GARLIC was how I made it through without getting sick at all while caring for sick family members. 🍎

Since then I juice garlic in many of my juice recipes or mince up multiple cloves as dinner toppings for chickpea pasta, beans and rice bowls, and stews. What I LOVE most of all is hearing my son say, “More Juice?” Proud Mama!!!! 🍎
