This post contains affiliate links from my favorite brand Mountain Rose Herbs. I love their high quality organic/fair trade products, and am blown away by their commitment to zero waste.

In My Brighter Hydrated Anti-Aging Skin Care I shared my latest regimen which included new favorite products to maintain a youthful complexion.  I make my own simple facial oil and facial refresh mist as part of this regimen.  Today I'll share these very simple recipes which only contain two ingredients each as well as more about each carefully chosen ingredient.

My Simple Facial Oil

What you will need...

I often get asked how much essential oil to add to a carrier oil or carrier oil mix.  My basic essential oil/carrier oil recipe is always 10 drops of essential oil to every one ounce of carrier oil or carrier oil mix.  I make it a priority to buy organic carrier oils to avoid unnecessary toxins.  Fats in general are supreme for storing chemicals and toxins which is why using organic oils are your best option.

If the essential oil that you are using is gentle to the skin such as lavender essential oil or helichrysum essential oil you can get away with adding 10-13 drops per one ounce of carrier oil.  If you are using a more potent essential oil such as tea tree oil, you actually want to use less for example 5-7 drops per one ounce of carrier oil.

The primary goal of My Simple Facial Oil is to balance sebum production, maintain hydration in the skin, and heal scars completely.

I chose evening primrose oil because it has 72.6% linoleic acid to only 8.4% oleic acid.  Carrier oils high in linoleic acid soften sebum in the skin which would otherwise create clogged pores and acne.  Evening primrose oil also has the wonderful ability of hydrating the skin and maintaining that hydration.  During the fall and winter seasons our skin is naturally deprived of extra moisture in the air, and deals with harsh cold winds plus dry indoor heating.

Because evening primrose oil is a fragile carrier oil that needs to be refrigerated, I make My Simple Facial Oil in one ounce batches and still store it in the refrigerator.  For travel I would transfer the facial oil in a 1/2 ounce glass bottle to use on the road and not worry about refrigeration.  Since I only use a few drops twice a day, I would not fill the 1/2 ounce bottle to the top.

Helichrysum essential oil is the healer of all healers when I comes to both old and new scars.  Helichrysum essential oil softens scar tissue, helps to smooth uneven skin, and improve the overall appearance of skin.  Although helichrysum essential oil is on the pricey side, you only need 10-13 drops per one ounce of carrier oil.  Once you have experienced the healing value of this essential oil, every drop is worth it!

My Simple Facial Refresh Mist

What you will need...

I used to really dislike using facial oils in the morning because I felt it made my skin look unnecessarily oily when I'd rather it have a more matte glow.  When I first tried Mountain Rose Herbs Herbal Facial Kit, I was surprised that they suggested to use the hydrosol after applying the facial oil.  I shared my experience of using this kit here.

Using a hydrosol after applying your facial oil actually helps the oil to penetrate into the skin more easily without the oily appearance.

Neroli hydrosol is extremely versatile because it is nourshing and calming to oily, dry, sensitive, and mature skin types.  Neroli hydrosol is also healing to scars and even stretch marks.  The scent of neroli is described as heavenly although I truly enjoyed the scent once I added helichrysum essential oil to the floral water.

Adding essential oil to this hydrosol only increases the healing benefits.  Because carrier oils are obviously more dense than a floral water I used much less essential oil per ounce of floral water.  I also use much more floral water over a week's time and did not desire to use up my helichrysum essential oil too quickly.

I have already noticed an improvement in my skin since adding these two additions to my skin care regimen.  As the seasons changed from summer to fall, my skin did not have the chance to get dehydrated and instead has remained as nourished as it was all summer long if not more so.  If you didn't get a chance to see my complete skin care regimen for the fall/winter season, you can definitely check it out here.  I only use gentle and organic products with the highest quality ingredients.
