Minimalist Beauty Tip #6–Tamanu Oil Eye Serum

February 20, 2013 by Dawn Michelle

Tamanu oil is beyond miraculous for skin regeneration!  This dark green oil absorbs quickly into the skin, and has been used by doctors to heal burn victims.  Tamanu oil is also effective for skin ailments such as eczema, acne and acne scars,  blisters, diabetes sores, dry and scaly skin, bug bites and stings, stretch marks, athletes foot, age spots, shingles, and more.

I first laid eyes on this natural oil when I was in Maui three years ago.  I’ve been using it ever since.

Most recently it has been a healing savior for quickly healing a dog bite that I experienced earlier this month.  Crazy I know, yet tamanu oil is doing its usual magic and I am so grateful!  (I started applying this oil to the wound as soon as the skin closed.)

I love using tamanu oil as an eye serum!

I used to apply organic tamanu oil all over my face, yet lately I’ve only been using it on problem areas and under my eyes.  So I am not over applying this oil, I use a Q-Tip to dip in the oil, wipe off any excess oil on the bottle, and place a dot under my eyes and to any areas on my face that need extra TLC.  I then use my ring finger to gently pat the oil into the skin.  Because this oil can be very overpriced in most natural grocery stores and not always organic, I always order it online.  I also don’t want to waste it, so applying it with a Q-Tip allows me to use it more sparingly.  If you are interested in reading more on tamanu oil check this original article I wrote 2010.

There are many extraordinary regenerative natural oils that can be used for all skin types.

One does not have to purchase a ton on skin care products to effectively care for themselves or their skin.  It is actually more beneficial to learn what nature has to offer and seek out what works for you.  The more that you become aware of, the more conscious of a consumer you will also become.

Purchasing your favorites natural ingredients in bulk, or from companies that sell in bulk, will save you so much money.  Some natural oils may cost more than others, yet you are getting a 100% pure and concentrated natural healing product.  I buy organic tamanu oil from my favorite seller Mountain Rose Herbs, yet I have also seen tamanu oil sold at Whole Foods.

Hi, Will you aIso do a series on DIY skin and household cleansers? I use diluted Dr. Bronner’s soap Baby mild to wash my hands. my hands are very dry, rough, and cracking at the wrists. Is it the ph really harsh for skin? Are there any alternatives? What do you use for hand soap? Thanks.

Hi Emmy, Hope you had a wonderful weekend! Here is an article with a DIY Multipurpose Household Cleaner. I may do a series in the future on DIY skin care, yet there are so many article on skin care too. You can read two articles on caring for dry skin here and here. For hand soap I use a vegetable based bar soap in the bathroom and diluted castile soap in the kitchen. I hope these articles help out. Best wishes!

What other oils would you recommend for dark under
eye areas? I currently use vitamin E oil at night and the 100% pure eye cream in the day, do you think these are good since i can get my hands on tamanu oil right away.

      Hi Catherine,

Both vitamin E and the 100% Pure Eye Cream are both wonderful. All natural regenerative oils will help improve the overall appearance of skin and under-eye area. More importantly it is about what is working out for you personally. I have puffy under-eye circles that I believe has to do with an imbalance with my kidneys. They are minimized when I eat really well, get good sleep, and drink lots of water.

Also I just found a great article on Dr. Oz’s website with a Chinese face chart. I believe in beauty from the inside out as well as natural topical products. Here’s an article I wrote about approaching beauty from a couple different angles.

      Best,
      Dawn Michelle

Tamanu oil is great. I bought it based on your original post as well as another you did on skin care oils. I bought mine at Whole Foods, and it’s Aubrey Organics brand organic Tamanu oil. I use it on my face at night after I wash with a raw honey/brown sugar scrub and tone with Aloe Vera (also from Whole Foods, the Aubrey Pure Aloe Vera). It seems to help soften my skin and fade my acne scars. I’m still really interesting in trying the camellia oil, though.

A note for users: please get your oil from a reputable seller such as Mountain Rose, or get it from a local health food store. I’ve seen a lot of reviews on sites like Makeupalley where people complain of a skunk-like smell. The oil, when fresh, smells nutty and sweet and is dark green. If it has the skunk odor to it, it may have been exposed to heat or a big change in temperature and gone bad.

Anyway, thanks for another great idea, Dawn! I’ll have to try this around my eyes, too. They’ve been super puffy around my upper eyelids (weird, right?) and I’ve had dark circles ever since I was a child. Maybe it’ll brighten things up a bit.

      Hi Lana,

I didn’t know Aubrey Organics sold tamanu oil. That’s probably a new item for them. I’m also glad that you are having a wonderful experience using tamanu oil. It is great at fading scars and healing skin overall. Make sure you use tamanu oil sparingly around the eyes. You really don’t need much at all.

As for dark circles and puffy eyes check out this Chinese face chart from Dr. Oz’s website. I really believe in beauty from the inside out and that with everything in balance our skin and our face will be radiant. I have puffy undereye circles myself that fluctuate depending on my sleep, diet, and stress levels. The tamanu oil does help regenerate the delicate skin around the eyes which helps a lot.

      Have a beautiful day!

I have don’t have under ‘circles’ but I have dark areas around my eyes.

On my top eye lid it’s not too bad. However on the bottom lid and and under my eyes it’s very noticeable from the inner corner, then gets lighter towards the middle.

Since I don’t have typical circles or puffiness, could this work for me?

      Hi Trish,

I truly believe that the appearance of our eyes represent what is going on inside the body. Here is a Chinese face chart that explains what areas of the face correlate with other organs in the body. Here is an article I wrote about approaching our skin and beauty from the inside out with different methods. Tamanu oil is amazing at regenerating the skin yet it is really important to care for ourselves internally more so than only topically.
      Best wishes!

      Hi Masha,
I don’t recommend tamanu oil for those with acne prone skin. I always suggest oils high in linoleic acid.

  • My Fall/ Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe is up FINALLY! It's taken me a LONG time to get this capsule wardrobe together. Much of it is linen, thrifted, and a few pieces I sewed myself. I was really worried I wouldn't be prepared for winter back on the east coast, but I did get it together. Luckily winter in North Carolina is not even close to winter further north. 🍂🍁
My Fall/Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe consists of five tops, three skirts, five dresses, three sweaters, three coats, two pairs of shoes, a scarf, bag, and belt. 🍂🍁 This #capsulewardrobe is still #modest and should definitely appeal to the #linenlover. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🍂🍁 Much love! 🍂🍁

  • My love for linen dresses hasn’t stopped. But since our big move from Los Angeles, CA to Raleigh, NC the budget for them has. Luckily I purchased a great drop shoulder linen top a year ago that I created a pattern from.
🕊
With this pattern I’ve made a top and two dresses so far. One of the dresses is in my spring/summer capsule, yet the dress I’m sharing today is for fall/winter. Today I wanted to share a bit of the process for making this latest dress on Minimalist Beauty.

  • I haven't posted many things on food/nutrition on the blog or even here for a long time since I've been figuring things out myself. One thing that I've been doing in the last few months is fermenting all grains, beans, and legumes. 🌿 I had stopped eating them all together because of the phytic acid that they contain which can really limit your diet. Fermenting grains, beans, and legumes makes a huge difference. If this is something you'd be interested in hearing more about just let me know. 🌿This delicious dinner is piled high with mixed greens, basmati rice, black beans, avocado, and a rather large mound of raw minced garlic which is my warrior food against getting sick while the weather is changing here in NC. #fermenting #minimalistbeautyeats #foodasmedicine
  • My most updated skin care regimen along with the HUGE benefits using only oils high in linoleic acid for six years in my skin care routine on the blog today. Wishing all if you a beautiful weekend! 💞Dawn Michelle

  • I never thought I would actually say this but, I'm really enjoying the bare walls of our new apartment. After the stress and chaos of moving our family across the country, I've noticed that bare walls allow me space to think. 🌿 We're constantly bombarded with information, and some of it we create ourselves. It's all much more than I can comfortably handle. 🌿 Just sharing some thoughts on minimalism and decor on the blog today. Pictured is part of my son's creative space. Hope you're having a great week! 🌿 #simpleliving #minimalistbeauty #minimalistdecor
  • Moving is always challenging. No one is exempt. Our family of three (plus our dog) recently relocated from Los Angeles, California to Raleigh, North Carolina. We made a stop in Virginia to spend time with family as well as recoup from the first part of our move. We then planned what we could for our new location.
🕊
This entire move has been a true testimony of faith since I’ve only been to Raleigh once as a teen, and we chose our apartment online sight unseen. 🕊
