I was sunburned for the first time last weekend. I know that may seem unbelievable, yet I’ve never experienced it before until now. My husband and I went to the UCLA Jazz Festival last weekend and were outside in the sun for seven hours. We had such great time hanging out with friends listening to live music and eating on the grass. I wasn’t even aware that my skin was being stressed.
Although I reapplied sunscreen I obviously didn’t put enough on my face and forgot to bring my sun hat. I experienced a mild sunburn on my nose and forehead. Although my skin wasn’t extremely sore, it was excessively darker which later became flaky. I’m having a pretty quick recovery for a few reasons.
1. Raw Honey Face Wash
Washing my face with raw honey is the best solution for sunburned skin. I always wash my face with raw honey but the added benefits it provides for my skin has been so helpful. The healing antibiotic properties of raw honey are extremely soothing to traumatized skin. Read more about raw honey as a healing face wash here.
2. Wheat Germ Oil & Rosehips Powder
Wheat germ oil is extremely high in vitamin A, D, and E which help tremendously with skin cell rejuvenation and turn over. I am currently out of tamanu oil which I mix with wheat germ and coconut oil for my DIY Healing Face Body & Hair Oil. Instead I used what I do have to make a potent healing oil which is wheat germ oil with rosehips powder which I purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs. Rosehips powder is very high in vitamin C so in combination with wheat germ oil is ideal.
Rosehip seed oil is wonderful for regenerating damaged skin which is why it is so popular in anti aging skin care products. It’s anti-inflammatory properties helps heal burned skin which is exactly what I needed. It is so hydrating to dry weather skin that I never experienced extremely dry skin.
DIY Sunburn Relief Oil
3 Tbsp of Wheat Germ Oil
1 tsp of Rosehips Powder
Simply mix and apply. I keep my oil in a tiny glass bottle and shake up before each use as sometimes the rosehips powder settles at the bottom. If you have rosehip seed oil just mix equal portions of rosehip seed oil to wheat germ oil. If I had tamanu oil I would have added that as well. Tamanu and wheat germ oil both have strong scents yet are extremely nourishing to the skin. They are my two favorite healing oils for that reason.
3. 100% Pure Pineapple Enzyme Facial Peel
I’m not okay with the look of flaky skin. As soon as all the tenderness was completely gone, I used my 100% Pure Pineapple Enzyme Facial Peel to exfoliate the damaged skin. This peel is so gentle yet so effective! I’m so glad that I had it because it really helped the overall appearance of my skin to be smooth, even, and glowing again. It is impossible to cover a sunburn with even my DIY Foundation so it was so important to get my skin back in tip top shape as soon as possible.
4. Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+
Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+ is my absolute favorite zinc oxide based sunscreen because it does not leave the blue white tint that most natural sunscreens leave on my skin. It has wonderful ingredients including hyaluronic acid which boosts the hydration and elasticity of skin and therefore inhibits wrinkles. On the day of the UCLA Jazz Festival, I was out of my Devita sunscreen. I used another sunscreen which I obviously didn’t apply enough of.
I bought more Devita sunscreen this week with an urgency. It isn’t that expensive especially since I use such simple ingredients such as raw honey, rhassoul clay, and natural oils for my daily skin care regimen. I have no idea why I let myself run out, but I’m so glad to have it again.
I will never go to another outdoor event without my sun hat or Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF30+ again. For those who are not fans of even wearing natural sunscreens, protective clothing is the most important way to go. This is my first and last time to get sunburned!
(One other perfect healer is tamanu oil which I am currently out of. New order on the way!)
