Especially during the colder months of the year, taking care of our hands and nails is crucial. My hands usually get extremely dry during this time a year. They are constantly exposed to all of the elements, not to mention how dry it can get indoors with the heat on.
Dry hands usually also mean dry nails, which can lead to brittle nails which can split and break easily. By whipping up a few natural hand and nail care treatments, hand and nails will look their best. Here are a few of my favorite remedies.
DIY Hand and Body Butter
What you will need:
Vanilla Absolute Oil (optional)
On the stove melt 4 tablespoons (2 oz) of shea butter, 4 tablespoons (2 oz) of cocoa butter, and 4 tablespoons (2 oz) of grapeseed oil on the lowest setting. Once the butter and oil have melted turn off the stove and stir. Wait a few minutes.
Now add 7-10 drops of vanilla absolute or any essential oils to add natural fragrance to your hand and body butter. (Look here for other natural fragrance combination ideas.) Now pour into a small glass container. You can use one 8-oz jar or three 2-oz tins and give as gifts. Refrigerate until solidified.
(Feel free to double this recipe to make this DIY Hand and Body Butter as gifts for friends and family. This recipe is simple, but this gift always feels like a luxury.)
Here are two beauty recipes for nail care from my favorite book The Herbal Home Spa: Naturally Refreshing Wraps, Rubs, Lotions, Masks, Oils, and Scrubs (Herbal Body) by Greta Breedlove.

what kindof nail polish do you use?
Dawn Michelle says
Hi Sheenab,
I like the Zoya brand nail polish and also I have a nail polish from American Apparel. The problem I find with American Apparel nail polishes is that the ingredients vary and some of the polishes depending upon the color have chemicals that I don’t want. A few other nail polish brands with great ingredients are listed here.
Hope this helps!

Have you used Sweet Almond Oil in hair as well? I’m trying to fund some other oils for my curly hair besides avocado and coconut oils.
Dawn Michelle says
Hi Serah,
You can use pretty much any carrier oil for your hair. Some oils penetrate the hair strands bette than others. Ceramide oils penetrate the hair shaft as well as coconut and avocado oil.
