I recently received a few questions about shoes and bags for the capsule wardrobe so wanted to share a checklist that works for me. When we are flooded with the idea that we need tons of accessories to compliment our wardrobe it is easy to literally “buy” into the hype. It is especially prevalent when you notice the need to buy specific furniture pieces to display a shoe collection or to store your bags.

In this situation you’ve made your accessories more for decor versus stylish function alone. Instead of having what you need and love, you are then buying shoes to display for appearance sake. If you desire to focus on a stylish minimalist lifestyle, here are a few suggestions for creating a capsule wardrobe for your shoes and bags. Depending upon your lifestyle and personal style, you will modify this accordingly.
1. Strappy Heeled Sandals
2. Neutral Pumps
3. Ballet Flats
4. Ankle Boots
5. Tall Boots
7. Athletic/Hiking Shoe
1. Classic Handbag
2. Crossbody Bag
4. Specialty Bag
Investing in high quality shoes and bags are important for daily comfort especially when you are on your feet all day, and for having that bag that still looks phenomenal every year it ages. I have extremely narrow low profile feet so I don’t have the easiest time finding shoes that fit properly. I have sacrificed proper fit for style in the past, yet gripping your feet to keep your shoes on, or having shoes that are too small for a slimmer width is really bad for your feet and body overall.
Just as it is important to have a proper fit for clothing to be very flattering, the same goes for shoes.
Once you find a style or brand that works well, definitely invest in the pieces that you need. Also all of your shoes do not need to be black or brown for a cohesive capsule wardrobe as that may be boring. Choosing a metallic strappy heel or burgundy oxfords are a fun way to introduce color and texture into your wardrobe. When you have a great collection of shoes that you love, styling your wardrobe is much easier.
If you notice the style of heel for shoes changes every season so that you are constantly shopping for the next trend. The same goes for the style trend of bags. If you separate yourself from these trends, you can pay more attention to what you like versus what “they” think you should have. This is especially true for your everyday bag.
Currently my everyday bag is a vintage Coach crossbody bag in black. I like to be hands free and save my handbag or clutch for other occasions. I love the quality of Coach bags, yet I adore their vintage bags specifically. The leather is thicker than most bags, and they look beautiful for years and years to come. There are many other brands that also share this quality and are well worth the investment or vintage find.
Having a high quality classic everyday bag in a neutral color of your choice will get you through the day with style.
A crossbody bag is great for travel, so even if it’s not your everyday bag it can be perfect on those occasions. Having a clutch is needed for special evenings out, while a specialty bag is just a fun extra. Your specialty bag can be any style or color that you like. My specialty bag pictured at the top is a gift given to me years ago from a friend’s trip in Africa. Yours may even be an extra evening bag or a funky electric blue satchel. It’s your choice!
Paring down to your key favorite pieces with accessories takes the same discipline of downsizing your wardrobe. Take a moment to really look over what you really use everyday and your favorite go-to pieces for special occasions. If you have a ton of accessories that are cute but you don’t absolutely love them, take a moment to figure out why. You deserve to have items you love, not pieces that you’ve settled for. Having high quality shoes and bags that you love really make your appearance truly look polished.
