Minimalist Beauty

10 Years of Minimalist Beauty

January 8, 2020 by Dawn Michelle

Today represents 10 years since I wrote my first article on Minimalist Beauty. I had started my minimalist lifestyle journey a few months prior to starting this blog. I was determined to create a new way of thinking and living so that I could pay off $20,000 in debt. My debt was from excessive consumerism on clothing and cosmetics as well as my car note. In less than a year and a half I had paid my debt down to $770. By the end of that year my debt was completely paid off.

Minimalism isn’t just a decor aesthetic, or having a certain number of possessions. Minimalism is a beautiful way to clear out the chaos of materialism and obligation while getting one step closer to your true heart’s desires and values in life.

During my journey I had to face my shopping addiction and the insecurities I had accumulated from being a dancer in the Hollywood entertainment industry. I focused heavily on simplifying my beauty regimen and style so that I was no longer consumed with the latest beauty cosmetics plus newest fashion trends since that was where much of my money was going previously.

I started making my own organic beauty products, and I started thrifting and creating capsule wardrobes instead of buying fast fashion.

I then had to stop obsessing over having the perfect wardrobe. This process took years, and I still have to check myself from time to time. Still I am far from where I used to be. Much of this freedom stems from no longer being in the entertainment industry and living in Los Angeles.

One of the most apparent transformations from my mimalist lifestyle journey has been how my home looks and feels.

Even with a toddler, there is peace and order in the look of my home. Being a mother in itself isn’t always peaceful and orderly, but my home doesn’t look anything like I feel, so that’s a huge accomplishment. Before this minimalist journey was solely my own, but now it is a lifestyle that my family has adapted.

Above is a picture of our living and dining space in our new home in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This big move truly has been a huge blessing. This apartment doesn’t have the best natural lighting, so a complete home tour may not be until the spring when the days are longer and brighter. Natural lighting makes photography so much easier. If I can figure things out earlier, I’ll will share it sooner.

Minimalism has freed me from being obsessed with home decor and I’m still loving our bare walls.

We haven’t bought any new art to hang since our move, and I haven’t created any myself. We moved with only the bare essentials of what fit into a large suitcase, two carryons and what fit in the trunk of my husband’s car which was shipped. Having very minimal decor in general allows cleaning the home to be much easier. Currently there are only three surfaces to clean… our low dining table and the bathroom and kitchen countertops. Keeping these surfaces clear makes cleaning again even easier.

Our furniture consists of only four main items… a Japanese style shikibuton mattress, a loveseat, a low dining table with floor cushions, and a children’s table and chair.

Minimalism has helped me create order when life gets crazy, and helped me stay focused on the task at hand. I had no idea when I started this blog that my life would change so drastically for the better. These past ten years has had its ups and downs, yet I am grateful for this mindset which embarking on a minimalist lifestyle has helped me with. I never expected to be a mother working from home running this Minimalist Beauty blog with the organic skin care line AZUHA. It’s been a lot to juggle, but God gets all the glory!

I hope that these past 10 years of Minimalist Beauty has been a blessing to you in some way. I’m truly looking forward to what 2020 will bring, and I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you.

    Hello Dawn Michelle,

Thank you so much for writing for us for ten years! I’ve learnt a lot from your posts. Your blog is an inspiration. I know you are busy mom but I hope to hear more from you (I would really enjoy posts about minimalist parenting, children skin care and your skin care routine). I’m looking forward to see a complete home tour. Your living and dining space looks so peaceful and spaceful. That big palm is giving a cozy, elegant look.
Wishing you and your family all the best in New Year

      Hi Joanna,
Thank you. I’m so glad that you’ve been enjoying the blog! I will definitely keep the article ideas in mind. I actually did share my updated skin care regimen more recently. It hasn’t changed much since that article. I’d like to share a home tour sooner than later, but I’m still figuring out the whole lighting issue. I hope you and your family have a blessed new year!

It’s been a lovely journey. I appreciate you for sharing your wisdom and passion.
My skin is on fleek thanks to your serum. ( Is that how you say it? 😉
Love your place. I hope the adjustment to living in a new state is getting better. Adjusting to a new environment takes time so don’t be hard on yourself.

      Hi Sandy,
Thank you so much. I’m thrilled that the AZUHA Red Raspberry Skin Elixir has been working so well for you! And yes it does take time to get adjusted to a new place despite growing up on the east coast. I appreciate the encouragement.

Congratulations on 10 years, Dawn! I’ve been following your blog for at least 5 years and I found you after we did our first household purge using the KonMari Method. I agree, minimalism becomes a lifestyle and while my husband and I are following it, we are working on our young uns doing the same. Getting out of a big city and into a smaller one is a great move; not only do you leave traffic and expense behind, but also the pace that keeps you running on the “more, more, MORE!” treadmill. Blessings for the New Year!

      Hi Raina,
Thanks for the kind words and for sharing this. Yes leaving the big city has allowed a more relaxing quality of life. I don’t miss the traffic at all. Best wishes to you and your family this year and with the continual downsizing. I’m cheering you on!

But I can only dream of such an easy capsule wardrobe in our climate (i`m from Russia, Rostov-on-Don, and it’s not so cold here))) I wish you all the best!

Congrats on this huge milestone. Love your view of life and your generosity in sharing. I’m curious about how you manage hobby items such as sewing supplies—I understand you sew a lot of your own clothes. Any tips for that?

Thank you Eddie! As for managing hobby items, I mainly have one now which is sewing. I keep my sewing machine in its box in the closet, and one bag of sewing supplies. I don’t collect lots of material so there isn’t too much to store there. When I was downsizing I had to honest with myself on which hobbies I actually did and donate all of the many supplies for the others. By sticking with one main hobby it really helped me. I don’t have much time to sew now but when I do I truly enjoy it.

Motherhood is intensely challenging, beyond humbling, and at times you just want the day to be over then realizing that you’ll be back at it the next day. Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a m Fenugreek seeds, also called methi seeds, have a multitude of medicinal properties along with being a prominent spice in many cultural dishes. For starters, fenugreek seeds are packed with protein for strengthening strands, mucilage for moisturizing and soothing the scalp while detangling the hair, and most importantly nicotinic acid which may minimize hair shedding while soothing scalp issues. Fenugreek seeds are also anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal which is beneficial for soothing a dry irritated scalp as well as high in iron. 🍂

These little seeds are a win win for natural hair care and can be used in various ways. I’ve used fenugreek seeds in my beauty regimen on and off for years. Today I wanted to share four easy ways you can incorporate fenugreek in your hair regimen to promote healthy hair growth. The link is in the profile. 🍂

God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture God is so good! We move on FRIDAY. This picture was taken before they removed the bricking which was VERY NOISY to say the least. We haven’t been completely able to avoid the beginning of the construction process, but I honestly think it’s a good thing. This way we can remain GRATEFUL throughout the entire process. GRATITUDE during LIFE’S IMPERFECTION develops CONTENTMENT. That is one thing I work on daily. If you missed our “We’re Moving Again” testimony it’s on the blog. 🌿🍁🍃

Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the wee Friday mornings are my busiest mornings of the week. I make muffins for Saturday’s breakfast (either corn bread, pumpkin, or banana bread muffins) to have with fruit, a big crockpot dinner for the weekend (beans & rice bowls, lentils and sweet potato stews, or a big veggie and red potato stew) to serve with bread, tortillas, grains, and/or salad depending on the dish, and I’m usually putting orders together to go out for @iamazuha today too. All the while I’m also making other food for the day. 🍂🥧🍁

Friday’s are crazy because of the usual responsibilities, but mainly because I really want to relax a bit over the weekend. Over this past year I’ve worked really hard to create systems to make working from home and being a homemaker easier. Homemaking really is like running a small boutique bed and breakfast hotel. It takes planning ahead, having a solid system, financial planning, commitment, and a lot of love. I’ve been learning to really enjoy this process. Just like everybody else I’ve been baking more this year than ever. Very rewarding. 🍂🥧🍁

Wishing all of you a beautiful and blessed weekend!

We’re MOVING again! With everything going on wi We’re MOVING again! With everything going on with the world wide pandemic, I’m seeing the importance of sharing anything good that the Lord is doing in your life with others. We need HOPE. We need to share the JOY of walking with God. The testimonies of glorifying God would just add encouragement that I know I need. I LOVE hearing of God making ways out of no way, giving us more hope and FAITH. 🌿🍂🍃

I was initially praying to God for ways to endure what we were about to go through while somehow someway making it nice for my family during the process. But God was already orchestrating a new way for us to not even have to endure it at all. Read my testimony on Minimalist Beauty... (link in profile) 🌿🍂🍃

If God has done ANYTHING in your life no matter how small PLEASE share it in the comments below. We all need to hear what’s good! The news shares otherwise, but we can create a space here of good testimonies. Please share below and I pray you are having a blessed day. 🌿🍂🍃

We could all use an IMMUNE BOOST right now. Here’s a simple juice recipe that I make for just that. I call it SPICY APPLE JUICE and my three (almost four) year old drinks it up no problem! 🍎

I simply juice 2 WHOLE medium/large APPLES (3 small apples pictured) + 3 CLOVES of GARLIC in a slow masticating juicer for one immune boosting serving. Yes I do include the core as it has many health benefits. 🍎

After having my 1st official winter back on the east coast last year, RAW GARLIC was how I made it through without getting sick at all while caring for sick family members. 🍎

Since then I juice garlic in many of my juice recipes or mince up multiple cloves as dinner toppings for chickpea pasta, beans and rice bowls, and stews. What I LOVE most of all is hearing my son say, “More Juice?” Proud Mama!!!! 🍎

I started wearing linen clothing because it’s ex I started wearing linen clothing because it’s extremely practical. Linen is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics on the market. Linen is also considered the world’s strongest natural fabric. After tiring of purchasing new clothing every season for my heavily worn small capsule wardrobe, it just made sense to look for mid and heavy weight linen garments that could be worn year round and layered that actually lasted.
🍃

Linen clothing can last up to 2-3 decades if properly cared for. I’ve made some mistakes along the way, but have finally found a simple method for caring for my linen garments. (Link in profile.)
