I honestly believe your personal style will continually evolve, yet once you clearly grasp it, the core of your style will not change even if the subcategories do. Your personal style will have a lot to do with where you live and the climate, as well as your career. In this article I wanted to share a few key basic style personalities. These are by no means the only style categories in existence, nor will they define any one person completely.
I realized that what makes a style icon is a mix of style personalities that create a unique sense of individuality. Usually one style personality is more prominent than the others mixed in. Style really can’t be 100% duplicated because your personal essence and the energy that you give off really impacts how you are preceived in the clothes that you wear. It is important to have a pretty good understanding of your style personality so you come across as authentic. Authentic dressing feels natural, not as if you are trying too hard to look a certain way.
If a style personality that you are wearing does not feel natural it will be as if you are posing, and the clothing will literally be wearing you not the other way around.
One of the best ways to determine your basic style personality is to write down words that you feel best describe who you are as well as how you desire to be preceived. Next I would write down what your current activities are daily and the type of clothing needed for your profession. Lastly I would select the words from what you’ve written that best fit how you’d like to dress. Here are six basic categories of fashion personas below.
free-spirited, gypsy, natural, intuitive dressing, global influences, earthy, vintage, funky, beach babe
Brand… Free People
vixen, polished perfection, sultry, bombshell, elegant, sophisticated, jewels & sequins
timeless, menswear inspired, tailored, simplistic, gamine, quality, understated, effortless, relaxed, traditional, clean
creative, artsy, unconventional, innovative, hipster, edgy, bold & dramatic, avant guarde, wearable art, show stopping
Brand… BCBG Max Azria
sweet, ultra feminine, delicate, colorful, more dresses/skirts than pants, romantic, goddess, whimsical, playful
minimalist, monochrome, streamlined, structured, neutrals, architectural, little to no accessories or one bold piece, modern, sharp, powerful
I decided to choose one brand or designer for each of the style categories listed. I also did not include “trendy” or “sporty” as style personalities for a few reasons. Trendy dressers tend to wear current fashion craves. It is helpful to understand your fashion persona and then add a trendy piece or two to to stay current with the times if you’d like.
When you base your entire wardrobe on trends you may come across as having too many personalities and not having your own individual identity.
“Sporty” revolves too much around an activity in my opinion to be a basic style category. I also feel that almost any style category, some more than others of course, can have a sporty vibe to them. Also if sporty becomes your fashion identity it almost seems like an excuse to dress overly casual all the time. If you are in your teens then that’s okay.
One of the best ways to also determine your personal style is to head over to your closet and take note of the clothing that you wear the most. Do some major closet decluttering and consider creating a capsule wardrobe of items that you would love to wear day after day without getting bored. I never thought that having a smaller wardrobe could be so satisfying. It is actually better than having too many options of unfulfilling choices.
When you are ready to shop for new pieces, take a list of missing items from your capsule wardrobe checklist as well as the phrase of words that best describe your personality and how you want to present it through style. It takes time to create a signature look, yet you will know you’ve found it when you feel amazing in what you wear in a very natural way. My personal style is classic and chic with a tiny touch of bohemian.
