While searching for the best pieces for my fall/winter capsule wardrobe, I lucked up on a Theory pants suit in aubergine. I’ve never bought anything in this color before, yet really love it. About two years ago I invested in a Theory shift dress in black that has remained one of my favorite pieces. This dress is also a part of my fall/winter capsule wardrobe. When I found this suit in a thrift store, I nearly lost my composure. It was in impeccable condition and literally for pennies.
The only thing that I wasn’t sure about was the cut of the pants. Both the jacket and pants fit to perfection, yet tailoring the pants to a slimmer shape was the exact answer. I look best in slim cut or skinny leg pants. Here is how these pants originally looked…
I used a pair of Madewell corduroy pants in wine to give me a better idea of the new pants shape that I was going for. I like to use safety pins to initially pin the pants so I can then try them on to see the silhouette.
In this picture you can see a big difference in the original cut of the pants and the modified version. Don’t worry I did fix the silhouette so that it was seamless. This is how the pants looked on pinned.
The final silhouette of the pants is so much more flattering for my body. I hadn’t finished the hem properly in this next photo, yet was losing light so wanted to share anyway. The hem is pinned.
By the time I finished sewing both pant legs I no longer had the best lighting to photograph the results, yet you can get a pretty good idea. I still hadn’t done the hem yet either.
I’ve never had to create a wardrobe based around suits as a professional dancer, yet this suit is something I’d wear simply because I love it for any occasion. You can get very creative with styling a good suit. When both pieces of a suit are strong on their own, wearing them as separates comes easily. I plan to perfect the modifications of this suit sometime tomorrow or the next day, yet am very pleased that I plunged into my first proper tailoring project.
I also have been taking photos of all the pieces from my fall/winter capsule wardrobe which I hope to share on Friday. I’ve put more thought and time into this capsule wardrobe. I’ve also done a bit of other modest modifications/upcycling that I’ll share as well.
