Minimalist Beauty’s first giveaway for 2011 is for the book The 100 Thing Challenge: How I Got Rid of Almost Everything, Remade My Life, and Regained My Soul by Dave Bruno. I spoke of the 100 Thing Challenge in my article The 100 Thing Challenge for the Fashionista. This book has further helped me understand why taking the 100 Thing Challenge and freeing myself of consistent consumerism can create new life changing experiences.
Freedom is the one thing that everyone seeks to find. We sometimes believe that it will come with bigger and better material possessions, which is why we constantly upgrade everything not only electronics. These things are precisely what we need to be happier and more content or at least we think. The concept of more is not the answer to our dilemmas. This book accounts that even as a successful entrepreneur living the American dream with a beautiful family, things can take away from the exact thing that we are looking for.
“Through the 100 Thing Challenge, I asked myself how owning too much was affecting my life. I could not resist using that same formula to question other areas of my life. How was working too much affecting my life? Was I working more but getting less out of life?
And it went beyond asking about the number of hours I worked. Just like I looked at all the things I owned and kept in my closet and garage and asked, “Why? Why do I own all this stuff and what good is it doing in my life?” I looked at my motivations for owning a business and working so many hours and asked, “Why? Why am I knocking myself out and what good is it doing for my life?”
Dave Bruno gives a new perspective on American-style consumerism. He also shares his challenging journey on how he freed himself of his consumer lifestyle and regained a invaluable mindset which he had been truly seeking all along.
“So much of the time we don’t trust ourselves to experience our world without stuff. Things so often don’t enhance our lives, but are the barriers to fully living our lives…Here’s the bottom line: what we really want we cannot buy.”
Whether you choose to take the 100 Thing Challenge I believe is not the only purpose of this book. The new process of viewing our consumer driven society and removing ourselves from “the matrix” is even more valuable. This is not just another book on simple living, it is a learning how to release past expectations that we unknowingly hold in our possessions, let go of self-impossed titles that we have given ourselves, and choose to emmerge in our lives like we never imagined.
