100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara

Last month I received a beautiful package of goodies from 100% Pure to try and test out to share with you.  I’ve already been a big fan of their products prior to writing this blog.  My first love was their Vanilla Bean Body Lotion before it was repackaged as the Vanilla Bean Body Cream.

I mentioned in this post that my husband loved the lotion so much that he used mine up!  I was so upset at the time, but now buy him his own 100% Pure Body Cream twice a year as a gift.  After trying more 100% Pure products and discovering the amazing quality of the 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Tinted Moisturizer and Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer, I jumped on the opportunity to test more their products.

One of the main benefits with 100% Pure products are the carefully selected antioxidant ingredients, refreshing and beautiful natural scents, and that the makeup is luxuriously designed without iron oxides or synthetic colors.  I’ve used iron oxides when making my own foundation, yet on the Cosmetic Database, iron oxides are rated as a 2 in toxicity.  On a scale of 0-10, it is pretty low, yet some may be a concerned even though there is limited available research.  Not to worry especially since there is an outstanding line of quality cosmetics that are strictly fruit pigmented stocked with antioxidant nourishing ingredients.

Finally the review!  I’ve tried a good amount of natural mascaras.  I’ve even tried to force myself to be happy with a few of them because I knew that they were better for my health.  If you are a mascara lover looking for a clean toxic free mascara that gives results, this is the best natural mascara that I’ve used so far.

Ingredients: Organic Green Tea, Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Honey Beeswax, Contains All or some of the following Pigments: Blackberry, Blueberry, Black Tea, Grape Skin, Pomegranate, Acai Berry, Boysenberry, Blackcurrant and Raspberry, Oat Protein, Wheat Protein, Provitamin B5, Seaweed Powder, Coconut Stearic acid, Mica (for shimmer in the Blackberry and Blueberry), Cocoa Butter, Pearl Powder, Rice Powder, Cacao Powder and Powdered Coffee Beans, Lavender Honey, Extracts of Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender and Golden Seal

My lashes are naturally thin and sparse and can sometimes be weighed down by mascaras with heavy formulas.  With the 100% Pure Mascara in Black Tea, my lashes were lengthened, thickened, and super black which I love.  This is the first buildable natural mascara that I’ve ever used.  It is necessary for me to put two to three coats of mascara on to achieve the results that I like, and it is easy to do with this product.  The brush applicator has a ton of tiny bristles and dips a bit in the center.  It is even easy to apply mascara to my extremely sparse lower lashes.

In terms of long wear this mascara stays put.  I’ve had no issues wearing it while sweating in dance classes, and have not seen any funny black flakes on my cheeks.  It doesn’t seem to be a curling mascara without the help of a lash curler.  I’ve maintained longer curled lashes when I used this mascara with a lash curler.

The ingredients are so unbelievably rich, and I’ve never seen such a combination in any mascara before.  This product also conditions the lashes, and is actually good for your lashes.  Another major bonus of 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara is the natural scent.  It smells like berries!  When has any mascara naturally smelled like berries and not because of toxic fragrance?

My final appreciation for this product is with the beautiful packaging.  If anyone has ever seen how beautifully packaged other commercial cosmetics can be, you will also appreciate that 100% Pure Cosmetics also has beautiful packaging with toxic free ingredients.  Beautiful natural lashes here we come!

Necessary Laughter

One of my new year’s resolutions is not to take everything in life so seriously.  I grew up in a hard working family, where the importance of education and success were instilled at a very young age.  One of the positive attributes that I received from this upbringing was an intense motivation.  The downfall of this attribute is sometimes not allowing myself to relax and put the work aside.  I can be busy from the moment I wake up right until the very moment I go to bed at night.

To find balance with my busy bee mentality, I am focusing on spending time alone being still, doing gratitude journaling, while also finding humor in my life daily.  Although this can be challenging at times, if I can’t figure out how to do it myself, I look to comedians to bring me some perspective and humorous distraction.

One of the artists that has truly changed my life is Reggie Watts.  My husband and I have laughed endlessly at his brilliant talent and outstanding ways he brings humor to his standup.  He is unlike any other comedian/musician that I have ever seen, and believe that his genius performance art will be life changing for anyone who ever hears him or sees his work.  I have yet to see him perform live, but am so thankful for YouTube.  Check out this video that will bring that necessary laughter to your life no matter what is going on today.  Happy Friday!

My Wardrobe Checklist

I currently have about two full bags of clothing that I have cleared out from my closet that I plan to sell and donate.  Over the past two years my style has dramatically changed and evolved in so many ways.  Some of the items that were working for me in the past are no longer working for me now.  Every time that I thoroughly declutter my closet I am better able to see what purchases worked for me, which ones did not, as well as what may need replacing.

Although I’ve written wardrobe essential checklists in the past, I wanted to update my list especially after beginning the year discussing staple fashion pieces while paring down and decluttering the closet.  My new list is more extensive than my others, and includes items that relate to my lifestyle, preferences, and needs.  Not everything on the list are absolute essentials, but I believe I don’t leave anything out.

Dressing For The New Chic You

Whenever I travel abroad, I am aware how extremely casual many Americans dress daily.  Most Americans only dress nicely for work or special occasions.  Clothing lacks a flattering fit and dressed up means overdone.  Wearing athletic wear or tennis shoes for occasions outside of the gym, participating in sports, or hiking aren’t chic.  Take pride in how you dress every day.  Mastering a minimalist wardrobe while still remaining modern will bring you confidence, save you tons of money in the long run, and keep you classy.

Why go anywhere looking frumpy just because you are only going to the grocery store?  Realize that if you placed importance on how you look every day, you would naturally feel so much better.  Dressing beautifully isn’t about vanity as much as it is about feeling good about yourself.  If you’ve ever watched a makeover show, you will hear the woman who had the makeover say that she feels so confident.  Clearing away the distractions of trendy disposable clothing will create space for a timeless stylish wardrobe in its place.  What better way to begin the new year than with a lighter clutter free wardrobe with easy to mix and match elegant silhouettes.

About six or seven years ago, I came across the book The Parisian Woman’s Guide to Style by Virginie Morana and Veronique Morana at the library.  I was frustrated with not having the right outfits, and sale shopping had led me to having a closet full of unmatchable clothing.  After reading this book I began understanding what fashion pieces created a timeless wardrobe, and that modest quality pieces translated well for every occasion.  Even with all the information that I learned in that book, copying the exact protocol for chic Parisian style wasn’t working out for me.  At the time I had not really understood my own style, and was trying to force myself into this classic chic wardrobe.

There were moments where I thrived on being minimalist with my wardrobe and other times that I broke out with bright patterns and funky trends.  I remember a summer in college where I only wore a few cute white tops and dark denim bottoms with flats.  Although it is a bit too simple to wear every day now, at the time I was relieved by the effortlessness of dressing, and the ease of doing laundry with few clothing items.  Finding the balance of the two has taken time.  I have continued to downsize my wardrobe this past year and am finally investing in a few pieces that will last me for at least 10 years.

Personal Style

I’ve come to realize that my minimalist fashion sense has only a bit of bohemian flair.  My wardrobe thrives on quality basics with a few bohemian accessories.  I love an elegant turban, an ornate bag, or artistic jewelry, but that truly is the extent of my bohemian style.  Neutral colored quality pieces uniquely designed with one or two printed and specialty pieces are all I need.

When learning that a coordinating three piece suit (blazer, slacks, and skirt) was crucial for the minimalist wardrobe, finding my own variation of this was necessary.  The blazer translated to a leather jacket, slacks were wide leg or skinny, and the coordinating skirt was replaced with the classic all occasion dress for my wardrobe.  Understanding your personal style, as well as what flatters your body shape are extremely important when remodeling your wardrobe.

Color Palettes

In Chic Minimalism For Your Wardrobe I discuss the importance of creating a wardrobe around a color palette.  Your color palette does not have to represent itself in all of your clothing pieces.  The more I declutter my closet I realize that I am always wanting to wear my basic neutrals.  If I desire to add color it is usually a scarf or piece of jewelry.

Now that it is winter again I am back to loving black as my main neutral color as well as brown based neutrals.  I do intend to look for a few lighter neutrals for the spring so I do not end up feeling like I did last spring.  Lighter neutral basics are timeless for spring and summer.

Staples vs. Trends

Buying the trend that is merely a stand alone piece is pointless.  Most trendy clothing does not mix and match well with everything.  Investing in five staple pieces can carry your entire wardrobe and perfect your minimalist wardrobe for style longevity.  Disposable fashion drains the bank while keeping you insatiably shopping with nothing to wear.

I believe that it is better to purchase a trendy accessory to stay current with fashion.  I personally would not want to wear the same trendy printed dress weekly, but would not mind wearing the same timeless neutral dress weekly.  A quality neutral dress is a chameleon piece to mix and match with everything else in a minimalist wardrobe.

I recently invested in a Theory 3/4 sleeve black sheer virgin wool shift dress.  Although the dress was on sale, it was still more than I would normally spend on any piece of clothing that wasn’t bold or for a special occasion.  This exact thinking is why many women wonder why they don’t have a simple glamorous wardrobe.  It is better to spend money on a few staple pieces that you wear daily.  Those are the clothes that receive the most wear and tear, unlike the formal gown which you will only wear on special occasions.

When I brought this new little black dress home I noticed how beautiful it looked with black sling back heels and a long classic necklace, how funky it could be with a leather jacket, heeled ankle booties, and a bold colored necklace, how winter casual it looked with a long green cardigan, black tights, and brown knee high boots, as well as spring casual with simply ballet flats.  Staple quality pieces are a must for any wardrobe to function with grace.

Five Staple Pieces

1. The Little Black Dress

After finally purchasing a quality LBD that does not have embellishments, I understand the versatility and necessity of having it in your wardrobe.  There is not one occasion where this staple item would not be perfect for.  I doubt I will ever travel without it.  The LBD is the biggest chameleon in your wardrobe for all occasions.

2. Blazer or Leather Jacket

A great jacket finishes the look of every outfit.  Last year I found an amazing vintage black leather jacket from the 80′s.  I used a seam ripper to remove the shoulder pads and have not had more than one or two days max a week that I haven’t worn it.  Your staples don’t have to cost a fortune, yet they should be quality.

3. Slacks or Cigarette Pants

Although jeans are comfortable and easy to style and wear, having a great pair of all season slacks or skinny cigarette pants provide versatility to when you don’t want to wear a dress or skirt.  Jeans can sometimes be too casual, and a great pair of slacks with heels bring elegance even to that staple t-shirt.

4. The Perfect Bag

I can’t remember where I read that a luxury bag to a women is what a luxury car is to a man, but it is true.  I believe that one great bag for day and one for evening wear are all one really needs, yet I have a few.  A great bag is a woman’s most important accessory.  When you find a luxury bag that suits your daily needs, you will no longer need to keep looking for the perfect bag because you already have it.  I suggest getting a neutral bag for daily wear and possibly a colored evening bag to go with your LBD.

5. Gorgeous Daily Shoes

Invest in a good pair of shoes that you can walk long distances in and still look chic.  They can be ankle boots, ballet flats, or oxfords.  If you are good with heels invest in a quality comfortable pair.  All heels are not created equal.  If you’ve ever put your foot in a pair of designer heels you will agree that I am telling the truth.  Regardless gorgeous shoes are the finishing touch to every outfit.  They change how you walk and also how you feel.

Daily or Special Occasions

Instead of saving your nice clothing for special occasions begin wearing the beautiful clothing that you already have now.  While it is true that modest colors and styles can move throughout the week seamlessly, sloppy clothing doesn’t do anything but make you feel bad about yourself.  Wear whatever beautiful basics that you have and learn new ways to make them the focus of your wardrobe.

Nice clothing does not have to be uncomfortable.  Dressing up doesn’t mean tight fitting either.  Building a wardrobe around basics does not mean that those basic pieces must be structured, corporate, and boring.  Our perceptions of fashion sometimes distort how we dress when we make false assumptions of what nice clothing represents.  A long jersey dress with sandals or flats is actually more comfortable than a t-shirt and jeans in the summer.  A cozy cardigan, silk blouse, straight leg or skinny slacks with booties certainly look better than sweats any day.  Your suit for work does not have to be overly structured and masculine.  Swap out the hard edge blazer for a softer wool or knit jacket with a flowing blouse and pencil skirt.

Declutter Your Closet

If you were to remove everything from your closet and drawers and get rid of everything you felt awful in, did not fit right, or was worn out and in poor condition, you could then see what was left.   The items still in your closet would be the pieces to begin your beautiful minimalist wardrobe with.  Get rid of all clothing that is frumpy, sloppy, and unflattering.  This also pertains to frumpy lounge wear and undergarments.  I break down the steps to decluttering your wardrobe here.

Separate the trendy clothing items from the basics to see how your wardrobe balances out.  If you have only trendy pieces, decide what beautiful basics would help to tie your wardrobe together.  If you only have basics, what colors are dominant and do you need a few more neutrals?  Your neutral basics need not be boring.  Find pieces that have a sleek silhouette and materials that drape the body comfortably and elegantly.

Simplicity is Key

Allow your clothing to embellish your beauty not compete with it.  When I was walking to the movies with my husband the other day, I saw a beautiful women who was doing the most with her look.  Her bright yellow blouse, super high heels, teased hair, and bold makeup were actually competing with her beauty.  It was hard to see her behind all of the style.  There is a subtle glamor behind classic sexy basics.  There is also a confidence created taking the time to define your “effortless” chic understated wardrobe.  Let everyone see you first, then your clothing and makeup.

Don’t wait until you have the perfect body, perfect job, or the perfect mate to feel beautiful.  Do it now!  Perfecting the minimalist wardrobe takes time and clear understanding of who you are and emphasizing your best assets in a classy sexy and feminine way.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to look beautiful either.  I’ve only invested in one piece so far, the LBD mentionned.  The rest was found either years ago or from consignment or vintage shops.  You deserve to look amazing every day, so go for it!

My Simple Holiday Decor

I absolutely love holiday decor, yet I never really do too much of it.  This year my family is  coming into town for the holidays.  This will be the first time in six years that I will spend Christmas with them.  I will be hosting Christmas Eve for ten family members.  I thought I would create the energy of the holidays in my home in the most simple yet festive way as possible.

I adore the beauty of Christmas trees, and for years past I would buy a tiny live Christmas tree at Trader Joe’s in hope that I could keep it alive to plant after all the festivities.  Well after three years of trees that never lived through the new year, I purchased a three foot faux tree from Target a few years ago.  Although it is tiny, it has represented more than enough for my minimalist needs.  It is too small to place gifts under the tree which I actually like.

This year my family is doing a white elephant gift exchange game instead of doing the traditional gift giving.  My mother loves playing Santa and forcing minimalism on everyone isn’t very zen.  Most of us are only doing the one white elephant gift and a gift for our spouse.  The white elephant gift exchange minimizes the stress of gift giving, makes it easier for my family to travel light, and saves so much money.

The other touch that for me brings it all together is a few amazing soy candles that smell absolutely delicious.  For Every Body created a Fall Blends Vanilla + Acorn Soy Based Candle that is perfect for the holidays.  It smells absolutely divine!

The final touch outside of cooking and baking will probably be a flower bouquet or poinsettia plant to place on the table with a beautiful runner which this year may be one of my scarves.  There really isn’t that much that needs to be done especially when there is great loving company, delicious food, and good music jamming the background.  Now that the place is clean and decorated, I need to get the Christmas Eve menu planned.

How are you decorating this holiday?

Let’s Talk Hair–Part 4

In Let’s Talk Hair–Part 4, I organized the hair care articles that I’ve written so far to make it easier to understand how to care for your hair in the most natural and simple way depending on your hair type.  I’ve had readers and friends benefit from many of the tips on this blog.  I’ve also had others say that they tried a hair recipe in the blog that just didn’t work out as they wished.

I’m hoping that this article will help you create the best regimen for your hair needs.  Also know that you do not have to be dependent on chemical hair care products to have beautiful hair.  If you are not interested in DIY hair care I’ve listed a bunch of great chemical free companies that create hair care products in Cosmetic Ingredients To Avoid.

Cleanse

I’ve chosen to go the no ‘poo route with my hair care.  In other words I am no longer using shampoo to cleanse my hair.  Recently I purchased the Terressentials Organic Pure Earth Hair Wash, a bentonite clay based hair cleanser.  Many of my readers here have mentioned that I should try it in the past, as well as a few others on Hairlista.  Because I do make so many of my beauty products, it has been lovely so far not having to prepare my entire hair care routine.  I plan to do a review on it at the end of this month, or beginning of the new year.

Many of the hair cleansing recipes that I’ve created and shared have been for those who are interested in the no ‘poo hair regimen.  With any very natural hair cleanser or no ‘poo hair regimen you will most likely go through a transition period.  My transition period lasted for about two months.  My hair looked fine, although it just wasn’t behaving exactly as I would have liked.  It also took some time for me to figure out exactly what I needed to use.  The one product that I had to give up was flax seed gel.  Flax seed gel worked well for me on top of a store bought conditioner, yet not so well alone.  I may use it to smooth down my hair for an updo, but no longer for setting my curls.

Soapwort Root–A Natural Cleanser

The soapwort cleanser is a very gentle hair wash that you can also use for face and body.  It does not suds up like regular shampoo, but it will cleanse very well.  If you have a very oily scalp you may want to alternate with rhassoul or bentonite clay for extra oil absorption.  This is a perfect cleanser for those with sensitive skin.  I would consider this the baby shampoo of natural cleansers because it is that gentle.

Rhassoul Clay for Shampoo

Clay masks or heavily diluted clay for a shampoo are my absolute favorite no ‘poo hair cleanser.  Both rhassoul and bentonite clay will detox your hair of any chemical hair products you may have used in the past.  For increased moisture, mix the clay with aloe vera for a diluted mix, or even coconut milk for a moisturizing detox mask.  I believe that clay shampoo will help you transition to a no ‘poo hair regimen the fastest.

DIY Herbal Hair Rinse

Herbal hair rinses feel like a spa treatment.  I’m learning so much about herbs for beauty and health.  Herbs add potent healing and strengthening qualities to beauty products.  You can try one herb for a hair rinse, or a combination of herbs for different results.  Herbal hair rinses are naturally acidic and bring the hair to a balanced pH.

DIY Green Tea Cleansing Hair Rinse

This cleansing hair rinse was my very first creation for my no ‘poo hair journey.  The more that I made this hair rinse, the less apple cider vinegar I used and the more honey I added.

Deep Conditioning Treatments

Deep conditioning treatments are especially necessary if you hair is not retaining moisture or needs more protein for strength.  Henna has been my consistent conditioning hair treatment since March 2010.  I used it weekly January and February this year.  Coconut milk is the simplest most inexpensive deep conditioning treatment in the bunch.

Henna Beautiful Hair

Body art quality henna is my favorite deep conditioning treatment hands down.  I can not rave enough about how henna has strengthened my hair, and provided a shine I didn’t think that my curls could ever have.  Since henna coats the hair cuticle, it is perfect for strengthening all hair types, especially chemically treated hair.

Chemical hair treatments leave holes in the hair cuticle to change the hair structure or color.  Synthetic hair proteins and silicones are needed to make the hair feel lustrous and healthy again.  A natural way to fill in those damaged gaps is with henna.

Please consider if you color your hair, you can not use henna then go back to chemical hair dyes.  If you have light colored hair may want to try cassia instead if being a red head isn’t the look you are going for.  Before doing either do your research first.  Because my hair is dark, having red highlights has been a beautiful bonus and hasn’t drastically changed my hair color.

DIY Protein Hair Pack

Sea algae used in many natural hair conditioner for hair strength and shine was my inspiration for this protein hair pack.  I believe this recipe is best for limp, damaged, or chemically treated hair.

Coconut Milk-My New Deep Conditioner

Coconut milk proved to be the best base for my henna treatments.  Since then I love using coconut milk as a base for many of my hair treatments.  Coconut milk is a deep conditioning treatment that can be done straight out of the can.  You don’t have to add anything unless you want to, and I love how inexpensive this hair treatment is.  You will experience soft and shiny locks with this conditioner.  Use can use coconut milk as a pre-cleansing treatment.

Missing Creamy Conditioners No More

Here is a detangling deep conditioner with added shine from the addition of apple cider vinegar.  This one is also very nourishing to hair.  This is also a wonderful pre-cleansing hair treatment.

The Wonders of Wheat Germ Oil

Wheat germ oil is a fantastic ceramide oil.  Ceramide oils bind to hair strands increasing moisture retention and improving the texture of hair.  Wheat germ oil mixed with any deep conditioning treatment is amazing!

Amla–Ayurvedic Herb for Health and Beauty

Amla is known for increasing hair growth and also bringing life back to lifeless curls.  Amla hair masks can be mixed up easily by adding water or of course coconut milk with powdered amla which can be found online or in Indian grocery stores.  The dried herbs can be used for a tea rinse or to infuse into an oil.

Simple Rinse Out Conditioners

I don’t have that many rinse out conditioner recipes.  My main focus has been deep conditioning and leave-in conditioners.  Along with the two listed, apple cider vinegar and water makes another great final rinsing conditioner.  The best ratio is 1 part apple  cider vinegar to 3 parts water.  Using more water to vinegar is also okay as well.  Adjust it to suit your own hair needs.

Hibiscus Petals

Hibiscus petal powder can be added to henna to increase the dye release to a rich burgundy.  In this case for a rinse out conditioner, making an herbal tea infusion is the best method.

DIY Herbal Hair Rinse

There are so many herbal hair rinses that you can create and enjoy.  The healing properties in herbs are more powerful than any synthetic ingredient because they provide long term benefits versus temporary fixes.  Like I mentioned before herbal rinses feel luxurious.

Leave-In Conditioners & Stylers

Leave-in conditioners are so important.  If your hair is properly nourished, styling products can be omitted or at least used less.  A few super simple leave-ins are aloe vera juice, jojoba oil, camellia oil, and castor oil (on wet thick curly/coily hair).

DIY Leave-In Conditioner–Simple Green Beauty

Here is my all time favorite leave-in conditioner especially when my hair was shorter, and when I wear two strand twists.  The scent is absolutely refreshing!  Aloe vera juice is a wonderful moisturizer and pH balancer.  This conditioner is a very light leave-in that can be even lighter by reducing the amount of vegetable glycerin added.

DIY Curl Conditioning Serum

This curl conditioning serum is hydrating and gives dull curls a bit of a boost.  A little goes a long way with this recipe.

Infusium 23 The Natural Way (Remixed)

Both panthenol and silk amino acids are in this recipe are not natural ingredients because they are lab created.  Yet there is also the addition of liquid vitamins and other goodies.  This recipe is best for damaged or chemically treated hair.

DIY Natural Hair Gel

Flax seed gel is so popular in the curly hair community.  As one of my readers commented, this gel is so good but doesn’t work for everybody.  Nothing works for everybody and figuring out what works best for you is key.  With flax seed gel you can mix it with other oils or aloe vera juice or use it alone.  It is best stored in the fridge and lasts about a week most.

Flax Seed Gel Made Easy

This hair recipe is more of a curl refreshing spray.  It is made much simpler than in the previous article and can be mixed with essential oils to your preference.

Coconuts-Nothing But Goodness!

For a while I believed that coconut oil was the best thing for my hair, then it wasn’t working so well, and now I’m back loving it again.  Some products are not synergistic together.  Now that I’m no longer using store bought conditioners and coconut oil is able to penetrate my hair shaft easily, it has again proven to be very good for my hair.  I also share my love for coconut milk and coconut water in this article.

DIY Moisturizing Hair Detangler

This recipe includes both panthenol and silk amino acids.  If you do not have damaged or chemically treated hair you will probably like this recipe most omitting the silk amino acids.  The guar gum is what makes this detangler so silky and knots will literally melt away.

The Beauty of Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is one of the lightest shine enhancing oils that I’ve used.  I was turned on to camellia oil by other women in the long hair community that used it as their only leave-in conditioner.  You really don’t need much and it’s light natural scent is subtly seductive.

My Hair Journey

I’ve learned so much about my hair over this past year.  Because this is not only a hair blog, I don’t always discuss every single discovery I’ve had with my hair.  One thing that I believe that will improve your hair regimen is to embrace what you hair does naturally and not fight with it.  Instead figure out how to shape your hair as you like without stressing it.  That is the main reason why I braid my hair wet to set my curls versus just wash my hair and go.  It is a gentlest way to shape my hair, then I just let it be wild if it wishes afterwards.

Curly Hair-Not So Minimalist

When I first started growing out my hair I was doing the most because I thought it was the only way to care for my hair.  This year I’ve learned that less is more in so many areas of my life including hair care.

No Poo and Soap Free

In this article I share how I stopped using shampoos, had gone back to rhassoul clay hair washes, yet was still using store bought conditioners.  Phenoxyethanol was the preservative in one of my favorite conditioners, and I just had a feeling that it was something that I no longer wanted to use any more because of it.

Ceramide Oils and Lush Fabulous Hair Care Tips

Here’s an article where I share what has worked for me so far growing out my hair.  I was asked again today what I am doing to my hair and the products that I use.  Most people are surprised how simple my hair care is and that I make so many of my own products.  You really don’t need much.  Hair care techniques can be even more important than the products you use.

My Henna Regimen Simplified

Some of you were wondering how I was going to keep up my henna treatments no longer using shampoos or conditioners.  Well it’s in this article that I give you those details.

Avoiding Tangles

Avoiding Tangles is again about hair techniques that have proven very effective in my hair care regimen.

Henna Is So Much Better Than Texturizers!!

I’m not crazy about relaxers, texturizers, hair dyes, or perms.  Anything that chemically alters the hair makes it harder to keep the hair strong and healthy especially without the use of chemcial ingredients.  It is also harder to grow out your hair to long lengths if your hair’s natural bonds are weakened, although it isn’t impossible.

I wrote this article for anyone who is interested in taming frizz or making it easier to wear straight styles.  I believe that henna can do exactly that for you.  I’m a curly girl not against straight hair, I’m just not crazy about the harmful chemicals used to achieve it.

New Additions to Hair Care

In this article I share my hair growth progress over the past year and also some new additions to my hair care.  I had thought about blow drying my hair more often, but I’m realizing that once or twice a year will probably be enough.

I hope that this was helpful to you.  If you have any questions, let’s talk hair below in the comments section.  Also check out Part 1, 2, and 3 if you haven’t already.  Have a beautiful day!

The Importance of pH Balance in Beauty Products

I’ve used many many cosmetic products over the years.  Being in the retail beauty business I had the opportunity to try many more products for free and receive full size cosmetics as gratis.  Regardless of what cosmetic company I was using, the best products overall were pH balanced and for health purposes organic and chemical free.

Once you decide that you are no longer going to use chemical laden beauty products, many of us look to what’s in our kitchen to truly keep it natural and also keep the cost of our beauty regimen 75% to 80% lower than what we were spending before.  We do our online research to see what others are using, and if you’re like me even buy books to learn about herbs and natural beauty care.  If you want to get consistent results with whatever you are using or making, the most empowering way to do this is to understand pH balance and purchase pH testing strips.

The Problem With Many Skin Care Products

The skin is a miraculous organ, which lets us know that it is experiencing an internal imbalance with skin ailments.  For many instead of looking at diet, water intake, stress levels, and prescription medicines, we turn to big selling skin care companies that may not be pH balanced, and in turn dry the skin out with high pH soap and chemical ingredients as well as overly acidic ingredients.  You may at first see an improvement in your skin, then over time either notice that the product is no longer working, or that if you don’t religiously use the product your skin is an absolute mess.  So what just happened?

When skin is taken outside of it’s natural pH levels, it no longer has its innate defenses from pollution, fungus, and other bacteria.  This is also when you are more likely to experience acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, and skin aging.  Skin care products too acidic or too alkaline can throw the skin out of wack.  When skin remains in it’s natural pH zone of 4.5-5.5, it is able to heal itself and very well.

It is very important that if you are using a store bought skin care item or making them yourself that each and every products remains in this healthy skin pH range.  You will then be working with your skin versus against it to improve your skins overall health and appearance.  Other factors that will also help is drinking lots of purified or alkaline water, eating alkaline foods, and taking supplements balanced in omega fatty acids.

The Problem With Many Hair Care Products

The healthy pH of hair is between 4 and 7.  That is a much broader range to work with than skin.  I also believe that if you use a hair product that is higher in pH than a 7 and do not follow up with an acidic mixture like aloe vera juice, a tea/herbal rinse, or a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse your hair will not be happy.

Many hair care products have so many synthetic ingredients that it is ridiculous!  We rate the product based on how our hair feels not having any idea that our hair feeling soft and smooth may only be because the product that we use coated the hair strands with synthetic fillers.  If you have used anything that chemically alters the hair, your hair literally won’t survive without the chemical fillers since the hair dye, perm, relaxer, etc. has created tiny holes in the hair’s cuticle.  The synthetic fillers keep your hair “feeling” healthy.

Shampoos and other hair washes that have a high pH over 7 make our hair initially feel soft, but in turn will dry out the hair by leaving the hair cuticle too open and susceptible to the natural elements in the air.  I learned this the hard way with natural shampoo bars last year. Following with an acidic hair rinse would have counteracted the problem which I later dealt with which was extreme hair dryness and breakage.

I believe not opening the hair cuticle with high pH products will in turn give you the best overall results and still following with an acidic mixture no lower that the pH of 4 will keep you hair shiny strong and in beautiful condition.  You will most likely experience a dry itchy scalp, dandruff, scalp eczema, psoriasis and brittle hair strands with high pH shampoos and conditioners otherwise.  Instead of turning to another high pH product store bought or natural, keeping the pH between 4 and 7 is your best bet.

pH Testing Strips

Finding out the pH of each of your beauty products  will help you really understand how to maintain a consistent skin and hair care regimen that works.  I purchased Macherey-Nagel pH Testing Strips from Luv Naturals to support Kimmaytube on YouTube, which is who I learned the importance of pH balance from.  With every product that I now make or try out, I test the pH to have a better understanding of the results I will get for skin and hair care.  It also gives me a better idea if the product that I’m making will give consistent results.  Even testing products that I used in the past gives me a clearer understanding why they worked how they did, and why I did or didn’t like it.  Maintaining a beauty regimen with a balanced pH will overall give the best beauty results.
