It’s official… no more locs. I finished combing my locs out this past Thursday evening. It took me 11 days to complete the process. There are actually a few reasons I decided to stop the locing process even though I was 10 months in.
The main reason I combed out my locs was that I truly missed my curly hair. I wasn’t expecting to feel this way as I was sure locing my hair was something I really wanted at the time. Starting my locs initially with braids definitely helped with removing them since my hair was mainly locked from the roots down, and not to the ends of my hair.
Combing out 10 months of shed hair including postpartum shedding is no small task though.
I wouldn’t wish this process on anyone. I had to use a store bought conditioner to comb out my locs, and I usually do not use store bought hair care products. But for this job it was necessary. I also used a small tooth comb and of course water to soften each loc as I carefully combed out my hair. I’m sure I experienced some hair breakage, yet I’m also surprised how much hair is still on my head.
Keeping my hair as clean as possible and moisturized while not manipulating it in any other way truly helped me retain length during these past 10 months. This has made me a true believer of protective hair styling and minimal hair manipulation which I have never been 100% consistent with in the past. I would NOT advise using locs as a protective style to later comb out though.
My current hair style pictured above is a basic wash and go which was slightly stretched with only oil as a leave-in.
Since combing out my hair, I’ve been wearing my hair in a bun to keep my son’s hands out of it. Nothing feels better than having a curious and active baby tugging at your hair. From this point on I’m going to focus on pampering and protecting my hair. The pampering part is absolutely crucial right now.
Although this second loc journey ended prematurely, I’m so happy to see my curls, and I won’t be attempting to loc my hair again. With the way my curls have responded, I think they are happy to be free and wild again too. I will share an updated curly hair regimen once I figure it out. The main aspect of this regimen will be that I won’t be doing the most!
