Last year I swore off capsule wardrobes completely. I was fed up rushing to complete my wardrobe and share it online while being very dissatisfied with the process. Well fast forward a year later, I’m back at it. To be honest I don’t know how to design a complete wardrobe that I love without creating a capsule anymore. After years and years of doing it, this has become a tried and true method that works for me. You may notice that I took my time with this one though.
One thing that I’ve decided to do this year is to separate my capsule wardrobe into a spring/summer and fall/winter wardrobe even though some of the pieces will be in both wardrobes. One year round capsule felt too limiting. After a year of not cultivating my closet, I played around with style a bit while also struggling to dress my pregnant body. Things didn’t really get tough until my third trimester.
I’ve been asked for pregnancy style advice years prior, and after my own experience I can’t say I have much advice at all. The only thing that I wish I had done was to purchase 4-5 actual maternity dresses and call it done. I steered clear of maternity clothing and was determined to only purchase fair trade and second hand apparel. My wardrobe was a mess. Well you live you learn.
The only thing that saved me were a pair of second hand maternity jeans, and a few upcycled pieces such as this one and this one as well as oversized dresses as shared here. Regardless I’ll end that rant and focus on the present. Just so you know the items in this wardrobe were purchased over the past year, and some are oldies but goodies.
My spring/summer 2017 capsule wardrobe contains 7 dresses, 4 tops, 4 bottoms, 4 pairs of shoes, and 2 bags… so a total of 21 pieces.
1. Thrifted cinnamon orange wrap top
2. Thrifted cognac maxi dress
3. Global Girlfriend white tee
4. Thrifted navy culottes
5. Gaia Conceptions cognac skirt

I’m glad that I didn’t rush this process of creating this capsule wardrobe. For starters I had to relearn how to dress the changes with my new mommy body. I also wanted to get away from having a wardrobe of predominantly dark colors and neutrals.
I wanted a wardrobe heavy on dresses which makes looking put together much easier than fussing over separates. Everything in this wardrobe aside from the Thrifted black and white dress are nursing friendly. I have an idea for that one which I’ll gladly share if it works out. I have my fingers crossed. (Update… See how I modified this dress here.)
