It wasn’t until I decided to create my own capsule wardrobe that I really began to understand my own personal style even more. When you allow yourself only 15 main pieces for the season including a few extras such as tees, evening wear, coats, and accessories, having a cohesive collection of clothing that you love is extremely important. Read tips on creating a capsule wardrobe easily here.
When creating this fall/winter capsule wardrobe, I learned that I never really made a distinction between my spring/summer and fall/winter wardrobe because of the mild weather in Los Angeles. In general I had one all year round wardrobe adding a sweater and jacket for warmth. Well this year I finally have two completely separate wardrobes with the exception of the thrifted cLaeson tan poncho sweater which you may remember from my spring/summer capsule wardrobe.

For this fall/winter capsule wardrobe, I chose pieces that matched my complexion color palette which is autumn colors.
I did not limit myself this time to only three main colors with neutrals. Yet because every piece is part of the autumn color palette everything still looks great together. I choose navy blue as a major reoccurring neutral to tie everything together versus relying solely on black. When I was shopping for new pieces, I looked at the photo above of the autumn color palette on my phone before choosing a piece to buy. No matter how cute a piece may have been, if it wasn’t in the color palette I didn’t get it. You will notice that 90% of my capsule wardrobe is thrifted. I find consignment shopping to be easier on my wallet and the environment.
My fall/winter capsule wardrobe consists of two dresses, seven tops, six bottoms, and for extras… four tees.

I have to say that I’m so happy that this capsule wardrobe is finally assembled. It does take a lot of thought and preparation, but once it’s done there is no stress getting ready in the morning for any occasion especially with a styling uniform or two already in mind. I just wish I had done this sooner!
In Refining My Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe, I wrote about my latest “uniform” and a few must-have pieces that I was looking for. Those must have pieces included a metallic/nude evening shoe (which I’m still looking for), basic and not-so-basic tees (check!), a black blazer (I found an aubergine suit instead), a button up shirt (I found two), and a cream/oatmeal sweater (I picked the poncho sweater from my spring/summer wardrobe and found two thin cardigans instead). I think I did pretty good! It really does help to have a plan.
Also a great thrifting tip I learned creating this capsule wardrobe was to check out the men’s section for great button ups. I specifically looked for slim-fit cuts and small sizes. That’s how I found the Calvin Klein striped button up above which fits snug. I also was open to using fiber reactive clothing dye for the Lands End Canvas cardigan sweater and the Equipment button up. I will share before and afters for the dyed pieces as well as more details in another article.
Curious how I find great vintage and thrifted finds… here.
