I just returned from an incredible visit with my best friend in Portland, Oregon. Unlike Los Angeles, Portland is in the beginning phases of autumn. The leaves are just beginning to change colors, and staying cozy and warm especially in the evenings is a necessity. My cozy fall essentials make the beautiful change in seasons so enjoyable.
I will say that more than anything else, being in good fun loving company makes everyday warmer at heart. There is nothing like laughing so much that you’ve done your ab workout for the day. Being able to laugh at the good and bad in life is so important. Know who your true friends are and cherish them immensely! Here are my cozy autumn essentials…
1. The Oh So Cozy Sweater
While packing for this trip, I wasn’t exactly sure how cold it was going to be. I was literally wearing one of my summer dresses the day before leaving since Los Angeles sometimes stays in the 80’s until the end of October. To my surprise the weather in Portland was gorgeous, yet the temperatures still dropped to the mid to high 40’s at night. I made sure to wear layers in the evening, and having my large cowl neck wool sweater which I thrifted kept me warm and feeling chic all at the same time. The cowl on this sweater doubles as a hood which is amazing!
2. Chic Comfy Boots
I always travel with just one bag which I carry on if flying. This usually means that I only bring one pair of shoes unless I’m packing a pair of minimal sandals. For fall/winter travel, having a pair of boots that are walking friendly, can be dressed up or down, are modest yet chic, and will keep my feet toasty is a must. These thrifted black boots, which I seriously lucked up on, fit this description to the “T”.
3. Fill Your Home with the Scent of Baking without Baking
My bestie is a true foodie. Having traveled so much of the world, she is big on cooking international cuisine. Cooking together is always such a joy!
Honestly when inviting scents fill the air, it always gets me in the right mood. I love to fill my home with the scent of baking even when I’m not. Here’s my super simple DIY home fragrance trick.
I fill a small stainless steel pot half way with water. I then add two teaspoons of cloves, pumpkin pie spice, and nutmeg to the pot. I bring the water and spices to a boil, and leave it to simmer for 20-30 minutes until my home is filled with the luscious scent of baking while I’m sitting cozy watching a movie. Effortless, partially lazy, yet seriously awesome! I’m now curious what this mix would smell like with a scoop of cocoa. Definitely set a timer so you don’t forget about it while it’s on the stove!
4. A Soothing & Detoxing Sea Salt Bath
Taking baths can sometimes feel like a luxury especially when I am overwhelmed with projects or life in general. I love how sea salt baths take the weight of the day right off of you. I always sleep so much better when I take a bath even if it’s only for 20-30 minutes.
You can purchase sea salt very inexpensively at the grocery store in the bulk section. Sea salt helps remove impurities from your skin while detoxing the body. I use 1/2-1 cup of sea salt with a few drops of lavender essential oil for relaxation.
With the change in seasons I’m reminded of how important it is to spend time with loved ones, not get caught up with drama and stress, and enjoy the beauty all around me. I was in awe of how luscious and green Portland is. It kind of made me miss Virginia where I grew up. Autumn has always been my favorite season!
