IMATS is one of the largest conferences for makeup artists and beauty gurus in the world. I was fortunate to be the model for celebrity makeup artist Valenté Frazier’s “Red Carpet” makeup tutorial for the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show in Los Angeles. If you don’t know Valenté Frazier, he is the personal makeup artist to Tyra Banks, Iman, Ciara, and others.
I’ve always admired Tyra and Iman growing up, and I now have a personal understanding behind their breathtaking beauty.
Distressingly I have done jobs where I’ve been displeased with how the makeup artist applied color to my face. I’ve had ashy gray itchy skin due to incorrect and thick foundation and powder choices, overly contoured cheeks and jaw lines in dark unblended colors, all shades of wrong blue eye shadow, and even an experience where a makeup artist cut my eyelid with her eyelash curler, and yes I was bleeding. I’ve even endured being scolded for a blemish.
Despite some of my makeup horror moments, I’ve had some good experiences with makeup artists too, but none like this experience at IMATS.
I wish I could explain all of the tips and tricks of Valenté’s makeup application, yet I was the one in the chair without a mirror not able to take written notes. I will say that Valenté is such a pleasure to work with.
Valenté is highly professional, has a brilliant sense of humor, and such a peaceful presence that is exceptionally serene and beautiful to be around.
During the makeup tutorial, Valenté applied four or five different foundation colors using his fingers and a firm sponge for blending to create dimension on my skin before even applying any other colors. My skin surprisingly did not feel heavy or irritated. He applied bronzer from my cheekbones and along my hairline for a warm glow and orange blush, my absolute favorite blush color. Valenté uses a mix of brands from Covergirl to Iman to Yves Saint Laurent as well as a few lines I am not as familiar with. For this red carpet look I was given what I like to call the Iman smoky eye. He used a khol eye pencil to shade my lids, waterline, and under the eye followed by a sparkly black shadow blended to perfection with a brown shadow. I’ve never had my eyes so beautifully done before.
I can honestly say that I’ve never felt more elegantly sophisticated in my life. Every woman should have the experience of being exquisitely transformed by artists such as Valenté Frazier at least once in your life, as you will never see yourself in the same light ever again.
Some how I appreciate my uniqueness in new ways, even without any makeup at all. Valenté Frazier is truly a beauty blessing to anyone he works with, and I am so grateful for this experience and such an enjoyable job. Best wishes and continued success!
