It can be easy to forget that washing your makeup brushes is extremely important. I realized recently that the reason I had a reaction to some makeup last year wasn’t because the makeup wasn’t of good quality with amazing ingredients, but that I had used a dirty makeup brush to apply it. After experiencing another mild irritation from not using a clean makeup brush I finally put it together.
Keeping your makeup brushes clean is extremely important to avoid bacteria from being transferred to your makeup or to your freshly washed skin. If you use makeup sponges or makeup puffs of any kind, purchase a few extras so that when you wash them and they are drying, you have a fresh one ready when needed. I now wash my makeup brushes every other day with castile soap. I use a microfiber cloth to wipe the brushes clean in between washing my brushes. If you use powdered mineral makeup, make sure you also clean the lid of your mineral makeup container where you buff the minerals into your brush.
These simple steps will allow you to avoid unnecessary breakouts or irritation especially if you have sensitive or acne prone skin. One last thing that helped me just the other day was using my hair blow dryer to finish drying one of my fluffy brushes which didn’t dry in time for me to use. I think that I will get an extra fluffy brush just in case for the future. Also make sure you know when makeup expires!
