Keeping It Simple Yet Elegant #OOTD

June 14, 2017 by Dawn Michelle

As I grow and change I desire my environment to do the same.  I had thought my personal style would change drastically now that I’m a mama, but it actually hasn’t.  I think it is more of how I see life and my role in it that has changed the most.  The main difference is that the woman in the clothing has evolved tremendously.

This outfit is basic version of ones from the past.  It’s a casual uniform of sorts.  Whenever I chose basic clothing pieces, I look for unique twists to an ordinary design.  I love a great white tee, yet choosing one with a flutter sleeve is much more fun.  I also can’t deny my love for denim skirts.  The one from last season which is also in my wardrobe was a dark wash and high waisted.  This denim skirt is a perfect length and color for the summer.

The beauty of creating a capsule wardrobe is disciplining yourself to be happy with a carefully cultivated wardrobe versus always looking for the next best.  It also frees you of the mentality of having nothing to wear and a closet packed to the brim.  There is no perfect wardrobe and striving for one is counterproductive.

In a time where there can be so much dissatisfaction, we must realize that we can not find true happiness in materialism.  This is one of the greatest lessons that I have learned from creating capsule wardrobes over the years.  Shopping used to be my former hobby.  I have found other activities that bring more joy and true satisfaction since letting that hobby go.

Each item in this look is from My Spring/Summer 2017 Capsule Wardrobe.

One Love!

That’s a cute outfit on you, Dawn. I love the flutter sleeves with the split in the skirt. I’m going to be more conscious of adding a little twist to my basics.
Did you make these earrings? They are just enough for this look.
Hope you, the baby and your family are doing well.

      Hi Sandy,
Thank you so much! The earrings were a gift from the hubby. Subtle twists to the basics make a huge difference. It’s all in the details. I hope you are doing well and enjoying your day!

  • PROTECTIVE STYLES... The only two hair styles that you will find me in daily are either a basic low bun or a banded ponytail. These simple hair styles keep my little one from literally pulling my hair out, help me retain length, and are extremely easy to do.
I'm sharing a few updates to my hair regimen, plus a few notes on how I stretch my hair without heat. As a new mom, simple just works best! (link in profile)

  • 10 Things I've Learned Through Minimalism 🕊 1. How to look presentable without obsessing over my wardrobe. 🕊 2. To love green smoothies & kick refined sugar to the curb. 🕊 3. No need for excessive consumerism during the holidays 🕊 4. How to make simple beauty products at home that actually work. 🕊 5. How to declutter like a pro + the awesome 10 minute home tidy. 🕊 6. I don't need even half of the baby gadgets on the market. 🕊 7. I have so much free time now that I'm not at the mall. 🕊 8. Letting go of the past + forgiveness can be very hard, but very liberating. 🕊 9. Having the space in your home is more valuable than filling it with stuff. 🕊 10. Consumerism is a huge distraction from your spiritual growth, spending time with those you love, realizing what brings you joy or unhappiness, and how you can actually contribute your gifts to society versus thinking about what you can buy next.

  • CLOSETS...
are one of the most challenging areas of a home to organize often because we see them solely as storage units. If you think about your closet as an active and very functioning part of your home, you will approach how you arrange it much differently. ✨

  • For NEW MOTHERS... 🕊
I am so in awe of all of the misinformation around breastfeeding. Thank God for lactaction consultants, the La Leche League International, great websites such as Kelly Mom, and some amazing books. If you are a first time mother-to-be desiring to breastfeed, learning as much as you can prior to giving birth will be very empowering. I took a birthing class, but I didn't research breastfeeding until after my son was born.
🕊
Knowledge is power, so the more you know on breastfeeding, the smoother your journey will be. Read more on Minimalist Beauty! (link in profile)

  • The weather has been all over the place here in Los Angeles. Some days are unusually hot, and the next I'm looking for my warmest sweater. We have mild winters compared to what I grew up with on the east coast, although this kind of weather really messes with your immune system.

On those cooler days nothing beats a savory bowl of delicious soup. I've shared recipes for soup before like the Creamy Garlic & Dill Mung Bean Soup, yet today's simple organic recipe is for a DELIGHTFULLY SIMPLE BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP. This recipe was a hit for my one year old son and my hubby. There is no age discrimination with this one! (Link in profile)

  • Today's article is for anyone going through a really rough time. It happens to everyone even though Instagram doesn't tell you...
🕊
Christmas Eve I confessed to having the most DIFFICULT year of my life. The reason I struggled more than I imagined had nothing to do with being a new mom, which is what most people would suspect. Instead, it actually had everything to do with me truly learning the meaning of FORGIVENESS.
🕊
Forgiveness isn’t something that you are taught. It actually is self learned, and some never learn how to do it at all. It took me A FULL YEAR to truly understand how to forgive after an experience of what I perceived as PURE INSANITY and LACK OF COMPASSION.
🕊
Read my "5 Life Changing Lessons On Forgiveness" on minimalistbeauty.com. This one is introspective and has a happy ending. It is possible to forgive no matter how dark things may seem.
🕊
