I bought my last fashion magazine yesterday. I love fashion yet I’m becoming more minimal every day. The one main reason is that I no longer desire society to dictate to me how to dress, wear my hair and makeup, and what fragrance to wear, including how much I should be spending on everything. I’ve read before that women are the flowers of humanity, and I adore feeling beautiful. Although it is only at my expense when I’m keeping up with what I see in the fashion industry.
The concept of minimalism has definitely kept me from needing to window shop weekly, purchasing the same items in different colors, and constantly buying while unsatisfied with what I already own. Here is exactly why I’m no longer purchasing fashion magazines.
1. Magazines create clutter. I’ve decluttered magazines out of my home once already this year so to continue to buy them only keeps this cycle enduring.
2. Fashion magazines keep you lusting. There is not one fashion magazine that I’ve seen that doesn’t fuel you with at least one to three items you now desire to buy that you never thought of before. That is the whole point of them. They keep you informed with every style and beauty product to keep you shopping.
3. Style changes constantly. Every magazine must contain different content than the previous one to keep it appealing. Since most magazines are monthly, every month there are different items you should buy that are distinct than the previous. Every month you are getting a new idea of how you should look. It’s all a bit fickle if you ask me.
4. The styles in magazines mix and match eight basic clothing genres to keep you engaged and confused. Once you’ve figured out what style genre you are most drawn to, you can create your wardrobe and streamline it to suit your needs. I think fashion magazines can be inspiring, but also keep you dazed.
Basic Styles/Genres
–Bohemian Chic
–Men’s Inspired
–Feminine Romantic
–Sporty Athletic
–Retro Vintage
–Minimalist Modern
–Classic Conservative
–Rocker Punk
Check out Chic Minimalism For Your Wardrobe to help you organize what you already own, and consider the genres of fashion to create a focus in how you desire to dress. My style is a combination of bohemian and classic. I own a few sporty things as well as retro, yet they still have bohemian and classic lines. (This could be an entire article in itself.)
5. Enjoy magazines from a distance. I love beautiful magazine covers, the bold colors, and the shiny pages. I love fashion photography because it is art. I love seeing what the latest upcoming designers are creating. Instead of buying the magazines it makes more sense to be to buy a fashion photography or street style book to look at over and over again. One book versus twelve yearly magazines from two or more sources is a more minimal way to enjoy fashion. I still see nothing wrong with flipping a few pages of a magazine while waiting in line. That is enjoying it from a distance.
Fashion is an artistic expression so why deny yourself completely. There are more ways to be a part of it all without always bringing it home. Designing a minimalist wardrobe that embodies the fashion genre that you most love will make it easier to create a simple and effective wardrobe. Becoming more conscious of our true fashion desires keeps more money and time in our lives. By the way “trendy” is not a fashion genre.
