DIY Protein Hair Pack

Adding moisturizing protein hair treatments to my hair regime was very necessary for my dry hair when it is feeling limp or lifeless.  I wanted to find something vegan although I’ve read about using eggs and mayonnaise.   After doing some research I came across something that I already took as a supplement, spirulina.  Spirulina is great to use for dry, colored treated, and permed or relaxed hair.  It has already been used in hair products because of its rich protein, mineral, vitamin, amino acid, and essential fatty acid content.  There are two ways to use spirulina to condition your hair.

1. Using a Natural Store-Bought Conditioner

Simply prepare your deep hair treatment by adding a teaspoon of powdered spirulina, honey, and olive oil to a 1/2 cup of a conditioner that you already own.  Mix it up and add to your hair after shampooing, gently massaging the treatment into your hair and scalp, then covering with a plastic cap.  Next either wrap your hair in a warm towel or sit under a heated dryer and leave in for 30 minutes to an hour.  Rinse and style as usual.

2. Using an Avocado

If you really want to make your protein hair pack from scratch, replace the conditioner with a mashed or blended avocado.  Avocado is extremely rich in essential fatty acids as well as vitamins A, C, and E, amino acids, and protein.  For this protein hair pack, blend a teaspoon of powdered spirulina, honey, and olive oil with one avocado.  Apply liberally to your hair and cover with a plastic cap allowing the treatment to penetrate the hair shaft by wrapping with a warm towel or sitting under a heated dryer for 30 minutes to an hour.  With this recipe, shampoo and condition your hair after your deep treatment.

You can always add essential oils to your deep conditioner.  Sage, basil, and rosemary essential oil are all wonderful for healthy hair growth.  All you need is five drops of essential oil to your mix.

Take note how your treatment if working for you.  You can always tweak any of the recipes that have been given as everyone is different.  Regular deep conditioning treatments can be done weekly if your hair is very dry and damaged, and for others biweekly or monthly.  Deep conditioning treatments with protein can be done biweekly or monthly as not to over do it.  There is a natural protein balance needed for healthy hair.  The key is finding what works amazingly well for you and doing it in a “green” minimalist beauty way at the same time.

Honey isn’t a vegan product. Bees die in the process of harvesting hives.

To strengthen hair, I like to mix braggs amino acids with distilled water and just enough apple cider vinegar to get a pH of 6.8. Comb through carefull to be sure there are no tangles, and leave on wet hair for 20 minutes. Rince well.

For elasticity and nourishment. Leave neem oil on dry hair overnight. Shampoo out in the morning.
