DIY Body Scrub

This is probably one of the easiest body care products you can make yourself with what you already have in your kitchen cabinets.  The benefits of using a body scrub it to assist the natural process of skin shedding and reveal new skin cells, and also to prevent to appearance of uneven skin tone and blemishes.

What you will need:

Carrier Oil (Almond, Avocado, Sunflower, Coconut, Jojoba, etc.)

Sugar (White Cane Sugar or Brown Sugar)

Fragrance (ex. essential oils, vanilla absolute)

16 oz jar

Fill your jar 1/3 full with the carrier oil of your choice.  Now add your fragrance.  I used seven drops of vanilla absolute.  Now add sugar and stir occasionally until you have almost filled your jar.

Using a sugar scrub is a very easy way to keep your skin soft and moisturized.  Because of the oil base, you may not even need to apply lotion afterward.  Feel free to mix your carrier oils or even add vitamin E oil to further nourish your skin.  Sugar makes an excellent body scrub as it produces a natural glycolic acid that exfoliates the skin beautifully.  If you prefer not to use a carrier oil, you can also use vegetable glycerin instead.

*Be careful if you have a slippery tub or shower.  You may want to use a rubber mat.

Enjoy!

I really like grapeseed oil, especially in the summer. I’m typically a coconut oil girl because I love the smell, but I think it’s too heavy for the summer. I use grapeseed in cooking and decided to try in my scrub mixture – it’s perfect, light and moisturizing.

Coconut oil is so yummy! Both grapeseed and coconut oil have wonderful nutrients for the body as well. Grapeseed oil is rich in antioxidants, containing high amount of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid good for skin cell health. Coconut oil is anti-fungal, ant-bacterial, and anti-viral, rich in vitamin E and full of antioxidants. Both are wonderful choices!

Question: how long does this keep? The sugar, does it “melt” after a while?

Also: why did my delicious coconut oil (Nutiva, good quality) ended up with mold in the bottom :-( ??
Maybe this summer’s intense heat? 12$ down the trash….

    Love your site BTW.

    Hi NC,
I’ve never had a problem with my scrubs going bad, yet if you want to ensure the self life of any of your products you can add essential oils, vitamin E, or grapefruit seed extract. All of them can be found at Mountain Rose Herbs. I haven’t experienced sugar dissolving in oil the way it would in a water based product.
Also I’m sorry about your coconut oil. I know that was a great disappointment.
Thanks for your comment and best wishes always,
    Dawn Michelle
