I LOVE fashion and creating a capsule wardrobe is probably one of the best things I could have ever done for my personal style. Having a separate wardrobe for the spring/summer and fall/winter seasons allows me not to be bored with my minimalist wardrobe while still giving me the freedom of not stressing over what to wear daily and always looking my best. By the time the seasons change I’m excited for new pieces and styling options.
I’ve written wardrobe checklists in the past, yet at the time I wasn’t designing capsule wardrobes with 15 core pieces. Now with this new method of wardrobe styling, I wanted to share the type of pieces that I look for no matter what season it is to create a cohesive wardrobe. This is my updated wardrobe checklist that works for my daily lifestyle and the types of pieces that I love most. For a strong capsule wardrobe I always pick quality basics but I still leave some room for fun and interpretation.
1. dark wash skinny jeans
2. another jean option
3. black (fall/winter) or white (spring/summer) pants
4. colorful, print, or neutral pants
5. long sleeve (fall/winter) or sleeveless top (spring/summer)
6. short, 3/4, or long sleeve top or sweater
7. denim/chambray shirt
8. white blouse or button up
9. blazer/layering jacket
10. silk blouse
11. black all occasion dress
12. colorful or print dress
13. everyday dress
14. neutral dress
15. skirt or unique piece
Extras (5-7 tees, coat/jacket, evening wear)
One thing that I learned from this past fall/winter was that I would have enjoyed 1-2 more dress options than what I had. In the summer I usually wear dresses more and always have four dresses in that capsule wardrobe. I did make some updates to my fall/winter wardrobe, yet I know now that having four dresses in my capsule wardrobe no matter the season is important for my personal style.
The more I style capsule wardrobes for each season the easier it becomes. I don’t create this 15 piece wardrobe from scratch. I always have pieces from the previous year that I design this new wardrobe around. Here I give details on how I plan out my spring/summer capsule wardrobe with the items I still love from the previous year. Having a capsule wardrobe is incredible, that is after it is completely assembled!
