I’ve been out of the rut of consistently wearing all black for two years now, and have played with color and prints more than I’ve done in a long time. I realized one Sunday standing in front of my closet that getting back to quality basics would be very helpful. I have so much color and print going on without enough staples to tie it all together. When you’ve downsized your wardrobe extensively as I have, it is extremely important to always make sure that you have at least five strong basic pieces that can be the foundation for your wardrobe for both the spring/summer season and the fall/winter season.
That Sunday I was extremely frustrated trying to determine what to wear simply because I had gotten away from my wardrobe checklist, and hadn’t replaced some much needed basics. I recently found these black skinny pants at a local consignment shop that just made sense. Paring them with simple pieces that day was just refreshing.
You may also have noticed that I’ve styled my hair in two strand twists. This used to be a favorite go-to style when my hair was so much shorter, and I was focusing on a simple and easy style to maintain healthy hair. Well I’m back to wearing my hair in twists again with a little something new. I will be sharing more about this style later this week.

Enjoy your week!

Love this look Dawn. I notice you have a good eye when it comes to accessories. During your minimalist wardrobe series, can you do a series on basic accessories that can work with your wardrobe. I have problems when it comes to accessorizing with things like statement necklaces. I know there are many YT videos on the topic; but I like your style and feel you would have some ideas which resonate with me.
Thanks for sharing your ideas. I really appreciate you and your tips.

Thanks so much Sandy! I can definitely add accessories to this series. I had already thought about shoes, yet not jewelry/accessories as well. I had planned to declutter some of the jewelry I had anyway so I can also explain some tips with how I style them when I finish going through everything. Great idea!

How do you do it? You always post different outfits that are fashionable yet still maintain a minimalist closet. I am trying to formulate my style and shop for my body so I’m stuck in the rut. I have always worn baggy clothing until recently. It’s not that I am uncomfortable in my skin (I’m a size 5) but that I have always been a tom boy and my closet is sweat shirt and jeans… It makes me not want to look at it. I am in my last year of college and I want to be stylish.

Hi Daisy, It takes time to develop your own personal style yet it helps tremendously to make a list of your ideal essentials. Choosing a color palette and learning what flatters your figure also makes a big difference. I wrote this article on how to create a capsule wardrobe easily. I hope that the tips will help you get started.
Best wishes!
