Happy New Year Beauties! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and has entered 2013 completely renewed and refreshed. I am extremely excited about 2013 simply because my husband and I are FINALLY moving into a new home!
We have been living in the same apartment in Los Angeles for six years. We are exceptionally grateful to now be able to enjoy a completely new home, in a new neighborhood, on a very beautiful street.
As many of you know I’ve been decluttering my home since returning from our honeymoon. To read some amazing tips on decluttering read this article. Over the past three years I’ve been striving to live a more minimalist lifestyle. One of my goals was that when we moved, everything would flow extremely smooth because of my new streamlined lifestyle. I had even wanted to be able to completely move and set up our new place in a day!
Now that I’m in the process of moving, the idea of moving and setting up our apartment in a day isn’t exactly possible.
For one thing, my husband won’t be able to move our couch and bed until the end of the week. Both pieces are a bit over-sized for one person. In the meantime yesterday I began taking over all of our smaller furniture pieces and artwork in my Rav4. In essence I’m moving the bare essentials of our place first while releasing anything and everything that I feel isn’t essential or necessary to Goodwill.
Living a minimalist lifestyle is living with only the essential items, and allowing what isn’t essential or absolutely loved to be used by someone else.
I also have come to realize that although I’ve already been decluttering for some time now, this move has given me the opportunity to truly give all of my possessions a once over again. It also gives me a chance to take in account some of the things that my husband and I share. For instance I will have the chance to really go through all of our kitchen appliances again and other things that may be in hiding.
As far as decor, I personally prefer my living space to have color and a decent amount of artwork. Unique pieces keep my inspired and artistically motivated. At the same time I love open space. I prefer art over furniture, therefore like to keep the furniture to a minimum to allow abundant space in our home. I also choose only art pieces that I truly appreciate. The living room in our new space is not as large as our previous living room. In order to maintain the open space in our new apartment, we are replacing the two living room chairs and dark cherry wood futon with a beautiful L-shaped sectional couch that we found on Craigslist.
I love that we are downsizing our living room furniture from three main pieces to one, yet will still have more than enough seating when we have parties or guests over as well as abundant space.
In every decluttering article that I’ve written myself or even read are the words “release unused and unnecessary items as if you were moving.” The only true way to understand what this really means is to literally act as if you were moving and pack up some boxes. What doesn’t get packed may need questioning and reconsideration. It is very helpful that I recently decluttered my work space, yet I personally never packed up any boxes as a test move as I thought that the idea alone was enough. I will admit that even with all of my minimalist lifestyle efforts to effectively declutter, I could have purged many more things. Well this week is that perfect opportunity!
I am actually feeling blessed that our move is not a one day event, and that I will have all of this week to slowly move everything while decluttering some more. In that way nothing will enter our new space that shouldn’t be there. I will also have plenty of time to make sure that the beautiful apartment that housed us for six years is in great condition for the next tenants.
For all of you who may be starting off the new year in a new home, congratulations!
Also take a deep breath and know that everything will go smoothly. I had a moment when I felt extremely stressed until I decided to affirm that this is going to be the easiest and best move yet! So far so good, and I am setting the intention for this to continue! I look forward to sharing photos of our new space with you as soon as I get everything in its place. Of course only the items on “my absolutely adore list” will come into our new space. Everything else will have to find a new home.
